Default Capturing a multimedia display

What software i(freeware and/or commercial) is available that will allow me
to capture a movie clip (both video and sound) when it is downloading and
playing on my PC? I would like to be able to capture and perhaps edit short
clips for use in a classroom environment - not for commercial purposes. The
clips that interest me are usually science related and the like.
.........................Thanks ..................CinciDave
