Adding a Win7 OS to a Win10 computer (multiboot)
Hello,
I wanted to install a 2nd Windows Os (Win7) on my Laptop, on a new part. I can boot on installing Usb stick for installation. But after firt reboot, when I choose Win7 (new system), computer tell me that there is something wrong on boot system. I can still only boot on "old" Win7 part. Is this mean that I can't install an "old OS" after a newer ? So How can I install a Win7 alternative OS ? Thanks |

I'm not sure if I see the point Just for testing an old software that can not be run within Win10 |

Reconnect the original drive and select the drive you want in the BIOS boot drive selector 3) Install Win7 in a virtual machine |

VERY IMPORTANT. 2) Create an NTFS partition for the Win7 install. You can't install without some space for it. Planning the setup is better than Windows making a mess... 3) Install Win7 into that partition with a custom install. And hope that the Win7 installer notes the partition with the Active flag and /boot folder in it, to place the BCD file. 4) The claim here http://superuser.com/questions/51158...-installations bcdboot f:\windows If you're booted into Windows 10, you could open an Administrator Command Prompt, check the drive letters, verify that F: contains the other Windows OS, and add it to the menu in that way. Now, type bcdedit which is equivalent to "bcdedit /enum" to see the new BCD contents. You can change the OS description in the boot menu. Each BCD entry has an identifier, such as {current} or {default}. You need to use the right identifier in a command, so the command is applied to the correct boot menu entry. bcdedit /set {current} description "Windows 7 (Partition 1)" 5) Since you made a backup in step 1, and also have your emergency boot CD available to restore the original OS, if any of this fails to work correctly, you're ready to try again. Why do it this way ? It's more fun. HTH, Paul |

Thanks When all else fails, I find it easier to load the oldest OS first and then progress onward. I had Win7 and upgraded to Win10. I wanted winXP for a legacy scanner and tried my best to get it working. I have to admit, I was stubborn and did not want EasyBCD etc. Finally just loaded XP on a clean drive partitioned in 2 pieces. Then loaded 10 on the 2nd partition. 10's boot menu pops up now and I can choose xp or 10. Set the timeout to 3 seconds and it boots to win 10 by default and fast. But that means a clean install of everything. Not the best answer by it worked for me. |
