windows.old
Hello,
I've a C:\windows.old folder that is not used. It comes fro an old installation that has been aborted. I can rename it and computer restart without any problem. However, I can't delete it as I don't have rights. How can I delete this folder ? Thanks, |

It's weird that a "hammer-like" feature, doesn't have its hammer ready tonight. There is always a larger hammer available somewhere. One of the reasons my current computer has two OS disk drives, is one is the "maintenance" OS, and I can use a hammer from there if I want. I have a ton of hammers here. A metric ton. I also have a foot-thick stack of Linux CDs and DVDs. Each one, ready to hammer mis-behaving stuff. But at this point, I'd be more curious as to why those particular folders chose to stay around. Something smells funny... Paul |

Diskcleanup and diskmanager does't delete anything. Folder was previously renamed so no file is used by system. Even renamed to windows.old again, diskcleanup don't show option delete previous installation. Subfolders have restricted security permissions I can't change. |

I thought the .old folder was supposed to go away within a certain time after the upgrade. It did on my desktop, but my laptop still has it with a few folders and 2 files, which I cannot delete. It says I need permission from Trusted Installer (they're Intel Display Audio Driver files), and even by "taking ownership", still won't go away. It then states it's in use by another process, and STILL won't go away. Well, I got rid of the files, but not the folder tree. The same files were also in the \Windows folders, in the same locations as the .old ones. So I disabled Intel Display Audio in Device Manager, and then deleted the two files in .old, then re-enabled it, and my sound works just fine. Ah, for the old "boot to DOS" days :-) That would take care of it, LOL! -- SC Tom |

After getting rid of the two files that were left over from my previous Disk Cleanup, I reran it, and voila!, Windows.old is gone. Thanks for the cranial kick-start :-) -- SC Tom |
