You can use "msinfo" to find the sub-version of your OS. The 10586 part may be stated in more than one place, but it's harder to get the portion after the dot in the number. When the OS receives a cumulative update and the number after the 10586 is incremented, your Windows Update will have no history. So you cannot look for a KB number, because these updates are like Service Packs. This is a release summary, provided by the "Read More" link in the Windows Update interface. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history July 12, 2016 - KB3172985 (OS Build 10586.494) June 14, 2016 - KB3163018 (OS Build 10586.420) May 10, 2016 - KB3156421 (OS Build 10586.318) April 12, 2016 - KB3147458 (OS Build 10586.218) March 8, 2016 - KB3140768 (OS Build 10586.164) March 1, 2016 - KB3140743 (OS Build 10586.122) February 9, 2016 - KB3135173 (OS Build 10586.104) My guess is, you had trouble after 10586.494 was installed. Using the KB number, you can see what changes it added. Maybe. It's likely to have received a new win32k.sys (kernel). https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172985 ******* http://www.infoworld.com/article/309...-10586494.html "The latest Windows 10 cumulative update -- KB 3172985 -- seems to be working well. more than a few complaints about failures to install, there are few reports of immediate problems." --- If you had a problem, you'd look for something "custom" in your setup, such as moving junction points for your home directory, some set of AV/spyware packages installed, or anything else out of the ordinary. If there were problems, the guy who writes that column would report them. Paul |

Still using WinXPsp3 and Win7pro with updates turned off. They do everything I want. |

If I let updates run, this driver is replaced instantly with the current unsuitable driver. I have set the machine to have an unmetered connection, and it all works fine, except that I get no updates at all. Is the only way to get normal updates now to seek out each one manually and try to apply them individually? Is there a simple way of doing this? I actually do want to have Windows 10 on this machine to try to use the more advanced diagnostics in the OS, but I really don't want hassle like this and don't have the time to keep researching and testing the OS itself. -- Bill |

I actually do want to have Windows 10 on this machine to try to use the more advanced diagnostics in the OS, but I really don't want hassle like this and don't have the time to keep researching and testing the OS itself. Start with this list. This web page should be updated each month, with a new cumulative. Installing the top-most one should be enough (as they're cumulative). https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history July 12, 2016 - KB3172985 (OS Build 10586.494) June 14, 2016 - KB3163018 (OS Build 10586.420) May 10, 2016 - KB3156421 (OS Build 10586.318) April 12, 2016 - KB3147458 (OS Build 10586.218) March 8, 2016 - KB3140768 (OS Build 10586.164) March 1, 2016 - KB3140743 (OS Build 10586.122) February 9, 2016 - KB3135173 (OS Build 10586.104) Use a copy of Internet Explorer (not Edge!). The following site uses an ActiveX plugin for the Shopping Cart interface. http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...aspx?q=3172985 And you can see the cumulative update for July is 500MB or 900MB. And it could have just about anything in it, if they wanted to push it that way. I would hope the drivers are arranged as separate downloads by later calls to Windows Update. So by downloading the 900MB one for x64 and installing it, you could keep your old driver. There might be a requirement that "old drivers" be the installable kind. if you were relying on a driver originally supplied with the OS, again, there would be a risk the update could change something. But this chit-chat is all rather pointless, as Aug.3, 2016, the Anniversary Edition (a 3.5GB download) will be coming in. And for a person such as yourself, in a precarious position, I would predict a "driver disaster". Now is a perfect time to do a backup, for later extrication. ~Aug 3, 2016 - Anniversary Edition (full OS, C:\Windows.old, etc) July 12, 2016 - KB3172985 (OS Build 10586.494) June 14, 2016 - KB3163018 (OS Build 10586.420) And for myself, this would be a perfect time for Microsoft to ruin my three Win10 installs. As none of my video cards are in "support status" by the manufacturer. So I guess I'll be in a mess too. I don't know if my single Crimson driver, will be "valid" for the Anniversary Edition. Paul |
