Stuck on Win XP Pro. Hooray !

I will NOT upgrade as I am 78 yo and am not interested in a learning
curve of such significance as Window Tension.

My XP Pro laptop is working just fine so why change ? Do not bother to
answer because I simply do not care.

My problem is as follows.
1) the start menu is too big and off the screen to the right. So I
cannot find or select of drag-drop anything over there.

2) my desktop is totally full of icons.

I just now added MyPal browser and it installed just fine and i ran it
an check some of my websites and it seems to be now maybe my favorite
browser.

BUT ... I cannot find it in the start menu and I cannot find a desktop
icon although I thing I left checked the installation options to add a
desktop shortcut.

So how can I get to see all of the start menu ?

How can I find the desktop icon ? WAIT, I did keep hitting 'M' and
stepped through the 'M' icons but MyPal did not show up.

Help please.

P.S. Run MyPal does start MyPal so at least I can get it opened.

Sounds like it's time for some housekeeping. First,
go into Control Panel - Add/Remove and uninstall
any software you don't use. The n right-click the
Start Menu and click Open. Then right-click the
StartMenu and click Open All Users. The Start Menu
is created from the Programs folders in these two folders.
Start deleting things you don't need. What I like to
do is to make folders named Utilities, Network, Office,
Graphics, etc. Then I put all shortucts to programs into
one of those folders. Then I delete all the other crap --
the 5 other shortcuts that most programs dump into
a Start Menu subfolder.

There's no easy shortcut method that I know of. It's
like asking how to get rid of the 2' pile of dirty clothes
that cover your bedroom floor. You get rid of them by
doing laundry and putting them away.

First you probably need to clean up your desktop a little. I am an
icon junkie too but I figured out if you create a folder on the desk
top for each similar type it helps you sort them out (video tools, web
sites, audio tools etc).

I know what you mean. I was in a similar position a few years ago, and
am beginning to feel similar now with Windows 7.

I use Classic Shell with 7 - which makes it look how XP did to quite a
large extent. (In fact I have it look not dissimilar to how '9x did -
for example, my windows have square corners, and the minimise,
maximise/restore, and close buttons are the same size and colour.) There
are a couple of other shells (though I've seen quite a few saying
Classic works well enough on 10).

My XP Pro laptop is working just fine so why change ? Do not bother to

I fear more and more web pages will only work with browser versions that
won't work on XP (or, later, 7). I know the temptation is to say "I'll
never visit those web pages", but you'll have to eventually, or at least
your choice will shrink _and_ you'll spend longer and longer on hold,
often only to end up speaking to someone who cannot _understand_ the
concept of someone who hasn't got a smartphone.

My problem is as follows.
1) the start menu is too big and off the screen to the right. So I

As Mayayana and gfretwell have said, you would probably benefit from
making some (more) subfolders in your start menu and desktop. My start
menu has subfolders for disc, genealogy, images, internet, sound&video,
registry, hardware, PDF, ...; yours will vary. (In general, I make a
subfolder if I have more than x similar shortcuts; what x is, is up to
you.) You will be irritated that - even though you're the only user -
there will be a hierarchy for you and for all users - but you can beat
that into submission easily enough.

(For the desktop, I find it less useful; although I too have lots of
icons, I mostly only use the ones around the edge anyway [I _don't_
operate most windows maximised], as most of the time I can't see others.
But each to his own.)

I just now added MyPal browser and it installed just fine and i ran it
an check some of my websites and it seems to be now maybe my favorite
browser.

BUT ... I cannot find it in the start menu and I cannot find a desktop

If by any chance you didn't, you can always copy the shortcut (and,
optionally, rename the copy) from the start menu folder to the desktop,
when doing the above tidying. And perhaps to the quick launch area.

So how can I get to see all of the start menu ?

See above. If the columns are too _wide_, you have a shortcut (or
shortcut folder) with too long a name, which you can edit.

How can I find the desktop icon ? WAIT, I did keep hitting 'M' and
stepped through the 'M' icons but MyPal did not show up.

Sounds like you didn't after all ask for one. (Unless XP doesn't add
when the desktop is full; I never got to that point so don't know.)

Help please.

Hope this does.

P.S. Run MyPal does start MyPal so at least I can get it opened.

Default I know, I know - Thank you !

Thank you so much.

Shortening the names on the start menu allowed the last column to move
into view and be totally readable.

Never realized I could do this.

Life saver !

You're welcome!

If it's going to several columns, though, I _would_ give some serious
thought to creating some sub-menus (e. g. sound, video, internet ...);
others here would probably also say do some housekeeping, i. e. delete
some, such as the ones you haven't used in the last [you decide].

It's not just Windows. It's everything. Even web sites. Argh! It's hard
to keep up with the fast changing technology as an old fart (not even 50
yet). I didn't even get a smartphone until 2015! I finally went to
digital hearing aids in mid 2015. I still prefer analog. I still use
lots of old stuff like VGA, PS/2, 3.5mm audio, etc. Older stuff worked better too. These days, they are bloated, expensive, buggy, etc.

I agree with you.
I say and emphasize that in recent decades, apart from Medicine, progress
can be counted on the fingers of one hand (and perhaps some fingers left
over). The other novelties are mere useless hateful changes, sometimes for
the worse, that factories use to create new products to sell and thus revive
the market.

Ant:

Most developers think they have "improved your experience" by adding all kinds
of "Features" that most people are not interested in. Web site developers these
days also tend to think "Change for the sake of change" is a good thing (ditto
Windows 10). A while back I downgraded a recently acquired desktop PC from
Window 10 to Windows XP.
