Default Rogue program is blocking my antivirus program

Hi,

My free Avast antivirus program showed that all 3 modes are turned off
yesterday. They cannot be turned on again. Avast troubleshoot leads to a
notice that a program is blocking my Avast; apparently from
"Avast.software.a.s." An Avast scan was clean. An antispyware scan
found 2 Trojans, which when deleted did not help. Defender scan gave
only an error message. Windows Malicious Tool scan was clean. I deleted
the Avast, then downloaded a new copy = same problem. My smaller travel
laptop is OK.

What can I do to find and delete the rogue program? If I am not
successful, then can anyone recommend another free antivirus program,
please.Many thanks.

There is no rogue problem. Apparently, Avast is blocking itself, or at
least appears to be. The most recent update of Avast had some severe
problems. There has been some heated discussion of it at the Avast
forums. Supposedly the problem was fixed in an update from today. Try
running another update.

Maybe there are some more solutions found in these topics:

Hi Nil,

Thanks ever so much for your very helpful post. I was not aware that
there is an Avast forum. I shall attend to this as soon as I finish
cooking and eating my dinner.

I wonder why my larger laptop has this problem, while my smaller travel
laptop does not. As a computer geek at a shop told me, "These
electronics are all crazy."

Stay well,

Mort

You're welcome. I let the update happen on two of computers in my
house, and there was no problem with either. After I saw reports like
yours I decided to hold off on the others until the issue seemed to be
dealt with. I should know by now to let other people be the guinea
pigs!

Despite the "all clear" reports, I'm still going to wait a few days to
make sure.

Mort,

A rogue program is one possibility. However, a rogue mouse click is
another !!

Have a look at this pictu http://tinypic.com/r/15n6sf5/9

Go to Avast user interface and select Avast shields control.
The above picture (highlighted item) shows one possibility.

Hi Nil,

I must have had an automatic update from Avast, for when I turned on my
large laptop again, the problem was gone, and everything worked normally.

Your excellent advice saved me several 45 minute drives to and from a
Geek Squad, a fee of $160.-, and much worry, = nice work indeed. I
really do appreciate your help.

Much as you do, I hope that the fix is permanent. Avast has otherwise
served me nicely.

Stay well,

Mort

Hi Monty,

Thanks for your input. I did not make an errant click, and my shields
control was always set the same way, with mail OFF and the other 3 ON.
I do appreciate your input.
This is a very nice newsgroup, with no sniping or bickering, in contrast
with some music newsgroups, one of which was driven to extinction.

The same thing happened to me. There's was a major upgrade in avast! (to
version 12.2.2276) and afterwards the thing was broken. In my case the
culprit was Privatefirewall.

Do you have a software firewall installed? If so, check its settings.

For recovery, you could try a rescue CD or USB from AVG (It's free):

For a different Antivirus program, I tried Panda Free Antivirus about
6 months ago and like it. It's cloud based and never gets in the way.

Be careful during installation to uncheck or opt out of any added
stuff that may be offered, that you don't want.

Good luck,

It looks like there were some problems to the new Avast
I wonder whether the firewall was the culprit

Some part of avast! was blocked. I switched it to 'Allow' and it worked
again. Can't be a coincidence.

LOL

Apparently, this was a "silent" update through the Emergency Update.

You must be right - after learning I had installed the bad update and
learning it had been fixed, I went back to update Avast again and was
surprised to find it was already updated to the fixed version. They
must have pushed it without any action on my part. I'm glad it's fixed,
but that kind of silent manipulation of my computer is disconcerting.

Can't find the announcement on the forum anymore , but I'm sure they
referred to the Emergency Updater.

You can always disable AvastEmUpdate.exe. ;-)
