New Application problems

I got caught by the same switch that happened in one of the Updates.
Kind of rude to re-use a file extension like that, but they did it, so
.... we have to live with it.

The easiest way to fix it is to simply change the file association. Go
to the .crd entry and you'll find it's set for CardSpace or whatever was
added. Simply change the association back to CardFile and you'll be set
to go. The only change MS made was to the file association for .crd.

Open Windows Explorer. It doesn't matter to what drive or folder; any
place is OK to use.
-- Click Tools; Folder Options.
-- Click the tab for File Types
-- Scroll down thru the list to CRD
-- Click Change and set it to use Cardfile instead of CardSpace or
whatever it is now.

If there is NO entry for CRD, then click New and create one.
Just follow the instructions; browse to it, add it so it'll open crd
files, and you should be good to go.


Maybe the best way:
Create your own Shortcut to it. Whatever the name of your cardfile data
file is, say it's "fname.crd", make a new Shortcut and use the following
for the Shortcut TARGET:

"C:\Program Files\CARDFILE \Rolodex fname.crd"

And again, you should be ready to go. I have two "rolodexes" so I have
two shortcuts; one to the fname.crd for each file. My wife and I keep
our own lists. Don't forget to use the quotes!

file with the right entries.

What am I doing wrong to not have the app open the file upon dbl-
click ?

I don't have much hair left to pull out. HELP!

Thank you for all your inputs. I have been trying to get to the bottom of
this, but have hit a few obstacles:


Let me recap what files I actually have in my folder (in case I am missing
something obvious):
1. Cardfile – application – description Windows Cardfile
2. Address file – crd file – opens with “unknown application� (when I browse
I can only have Windows CardSpace which will not work). For me to open this
file, I have to open the application (1.) first and then use it to open this
address file.

What I have tried:
- I have tried to create a shortcut to the address file (2.) above and then
change the target to "C:\Program Files\CARDFILE \Rolodex address.crd" but
a. It cannot find the target and
b. I do not have this Rolodex system you mention (I think..!)

- I also managed to do Tools/ Folder Options/ File Types and create a new
CRD option (which then changed the suffix of my address file in (2.). But I
am still not able to open it directly.

I hope that I am not being dumb here.

I appreciate any other ides you have, or advice on what I am not doing
right, etc.

Because you have not installed CardSpace, right? Whatever update made
the changes, they are set for the program called CardSpace, which took
away your settings for CardFile because they each use .crd datafiles.
Since you do not want to use CardSpace, then the following should work
for CardFile.

For me
to open this file, I have to open the application (1.) first and then
use it to open this address file.

Sounds right; Been there, Done that.

I'm going to make up paths here. Change the paths to match your own
folder/file names instead.

-- Cardfile.exe is located in c:\Program Files\Cardfile\, right? The
folder Cardfile contains the file cardfile.exe. The full path would be:
"C:\Program Files\Cardfile\cardfile.exe". The quotes are necessary
because there is a space used in one of the folders; namely Program
Files. Always remember the quotes.
C:
Program Files
Cardfile
Cardfile.exe


-- Usually the data files for Cardfile (the *.crd files) default
location is the same as the program, but not necessarily. For this
example, let's keep them in the same folder; "C:\Program
Files\Cardfile\fname.crd. Where "fname" is the name you decided to use
for the data file.


OK, let's take it from where we know you have cardfile.exe in the
c:\program files\cardfile\ folder. In Explorer, it'll look something
like this:

C:
Program Files
Cardfile
cardfile.exe
fname.crd

If you don't have an fname.crd there, create one. It's just a text
file.

-- Open Notepad and place one space at the beginning of the page;
nothing else.
-- Save the file to C:\Program Files\Cardfile\fname.crd where fname
is any name of your choosing. To keep from saving it with a .txt
extension, in the Save As Type bottom box, choose "*.* All Files"
and then type in the full filename, fname.crd and click Save or OK,
whichever it is.

Back to windows Explorer; find C:\Program Files\Cardfile\fname.crd and

-- Highlight (click on) fname.crd, or whatever filename you used.
"fname" is OK for a filename if you want to. It can always be Renamed
later on.
-- Right click on fname.crd and note the list of options that drops
down.
-- Highlight Send To in that list that dropped down and then
click on "Desktop (Create Shortcut). There should be a shortcut for
fname,crd on the desktop now. For now it won't do much if you click on
it.

SET THE FILE ASSOCIATION:
-- In windows Explorer, click Tools; Folder Options.
-- In Folder Options, click the File Types tab.
-- If there is already a .crd entry, click Change
-- If there is no .crd entry, click NEW and add the CRD extenstion
(WITHOUT the dot (.)).
-- Now there is a CRD entry to work on.
-- Find the CRD entry
-- Click Change
-- Fill in the required data by browsing to cardfile.exe and click on
it, then click OK. If it's not in the list, which it probably isn't,
then use the Browser feature to naviaget to the cardfile.exe file and
choos it that way.

SET COMPATABILITY:
MIght's well save a later question and set the compatability mode for
it right now. Assuming your cardfile.exe is the one that came from
windows 95 or 98, you should set the compatability accordingly.
This MAY NOT be necessary; it wasn't for me, but sometimes it helps
if things don't run quite right:

-- Using Windows Explorer again, go to cardfile.exe again, which is in
c:\program files\cardfile\.
-- RIGHT click on cardfile.exe.
-- In the list of options that drops down, click on Properties and the
properties window will open.
-- Click on the tab that says "Compatability".
-- Click "Run this program in compatability mode for:"
-- Click the down arrow on the right of the box,
-- Choose windows 95 or windows 98, whichever version your
cardfile came from. If you aren't sure, start with win95; it should
work for both. If not, then try win98.
-------------------------

You should now be able to click the fname.crd icon on the desktop that
you made and start cardfile which will open with fname.crd displayed. If
you already have a cardfile data file, then use that instead for your
fname.crd. fname.crd was just a placeholder to let things get started
but if you have a real file, then go ahead and use that instead. Just
be sure to use a copy of it, not the original - mistakes do happen.

I've done my best to not leave anything out here, but if I have, you'll
discover it simply by being sure to read each screen before you leave
it. Most of what I've said here is also given in the various dialog
boxes as you go through these steps, but hopefully with a bit better
context.

If it still doesn't work, be sure to be as explicit as you can when you
describe what happened when and how. Quote the full text of any error
messages and exactly what step you performed when you got the message,
and what you did next. Too much data is not a problem.

That should also have worked. The only difference between this and all
the above is that you have to create such a shortcut every time you want
to do something different.
You should NOT have used MY path with Rolodex in it, but instead YOUR
OWN path to where the files are. Still using the same example file
structure as above, the path in that case would be:

"C:\program files\cardfile\cardfile.exe" "C:\program
files\cardfile\fname.crd" --- INCLUDE these quotes!
Remember, this is an EXAMPLE and I made up the path, although it should
work if you do things exactly as I stated them. If, for instance you
wanted to use a folder called "Phone Numbers" instead of "Cardfile",
they you'd have to replace the 'cardfile" in the line above to "Phone
Numbers" (no quotes, just used them for emphasis).
Same for fname.crd. If your file was named, say, Port Skewitt
Area.crd, then you're replace fname.crd with Port Skewitt Area.crd.
See what I mean? You have to be sure to use YOUR file and folder names,
not mine.

If you're still having troubles and can't get it to work, I suggest we
take the converstaion off-group so we can use HTML e-mails and include
graphic images of these things. It's hard to describe pictorially
things that are so much clearer in an image.
Then once we get it working right, you can reply back to the group
with what the final outcome was and whether you got things going.
If you'd like to go offgroup, let me know and I'll give you a
temporary address you can use to contact me. You'll have to do the same
for me of course and I recommend you also use a temporary or throw-away
address.

whichever it is.

Back to windows Explorer; find C:\Program Files\Cardfile\fname.crd and

-- Highlight (click on) fname.crd, or whatever filename you used.
"fname" is OK for a filename if you want to. It can always be Renamed
later on.
-- Right click on fname.crd and note the list of options that drops
down.
-- Highlight Send To in that list that dropped down and then
click on "Desktop (Create Shortcut). There should be a shortcut for
fname,crd on the desktop now. For now it won't do much if you click on
it.

SET THE FILE ASSOCIATION:
-- In windows Explorer, click Tools; Folder Options.
-- In Folder Options, click the File Types tab.
-- If there is already a .crd entry, click Change
-- If there is no .crd entry, click NEW and add the CRD extenstion
(WITHOUT the dot (.)).
-- Now there is a CRD entry to work on.
-- Find the CRD entry
-- Click Change
-- Fill in the required data by browsing to cardfile.exe and click on
it, then click OK. If it's not in the list, which it probably isn't,
then use the Browser feature to naviaget to the cardfile.exe file and
choos it that way.

MIght's well save a later question and set the compatability mode for
it right now. Assuming your cardfile.exe is the one that came from
windows 95 or 98, you should set the compatability accordingly.
This MAY NOT be necessary; it wasn't for me, but sometimes it helps
if things don't run quite right:

-- Using Windows Explorer again, go to cardfile.exe again, which is in
c:\program files\cardfile\.
-- RIGHT click on cardfile.exe.
-- In the list of options that drops down, click on Properties and the
properties window will open.
-- Click on the tab that says "Compatability".
-- Click "Run this program in compatability mode for:"
-- Click the down arrow on the right of the box,
-- Choose windows 95 or windows 98, whichever version your
cardfile came from. If you aren't sure, start with win95; it should
work for both. If not, then try win98.
-------------------------

You should now be able to click the fname.crd icon on the desktop that
you made and start cardfile which will open with fname.crd displayed. If
you already have a cardfile data file, then use that instead for your
fname.crd. fname.crd was just a placeholder to let things get started
but if you have a real file, then go ahead and use that instead. Just
be sure to use a copy of it, not the original - mistakes do happen.

I've done my best to not leave anything out here, but if I have, you'll
discover it simply by being sure to read each screen before you leave
it. Most of what I've said here is also given in the various dialog
boxes as you go through these steps, but hopefully with a bit better
context.

If it still doesn't work, be sure to be as explicit as you can when you
describe what happened when and how. Quote the full text of any error
messages and exactly what step you performed when you got the message,
and what you did next. Too much data is not a problem.


What I have tried:
- I have tried to create a shortcut to the address file (2.) above
and then change the target to "C:\Program Files\CARDFILE \Rolodex
address.crd" but a. It cannot find the target and
b. I do not have this Rolodex system you mention (I think..!)

That should also have worked. The only difference between this and all
the above is that you have to create such a shortcut every time you want
to do something different.
You should NOT have used MY path with Rolodex in it, but instead YOUR
OWN path to where the files are. Still using the same example file
structure as above, the path in that case would be:

"C:\program files\cardfile\cardfile.exe" "C:\program
files\cardfile\fname.crd" --- INCLUDE these quotes!
Remember, this is an EXAMPLE and I made up the path, although it should
work if you do things exactly as I stated them. If, for instance you
wanted to use a folder called "Phone Numbers" instead of "Cardfile",
they you'd have to replace the 'cardfile" in the line above to "Phone
Numbers" (no quotes, just used them for emphasis).
Same for fname.crd. If your file was named, say, Port Skewitt
Area.crd, then you're replace fname.crd with Port Skewitt Area.crd.
See what I mean? You have to be sure to use YOUR file and folder names,
not mine.

If you're still having troubles and can't get it to work, I suggest we
take the converstaion off-group so we can use HTML e-mails and include
graphic images of these things. It's hard to describe pictorially
things that are so much clearer in an image.
Then once we get it working right, you can reply back to the group
with what the final outcome was and whether you got things going.
If you'd like to go offgroup, let me know and I'll give you a
temporary address you can use to contact me. You'll have to do the same
for me of course and I recommend you also use a temporary or throw-away

Thank you so much for all this. Just back from a trip and will work through
all this.

Just for clarity (I've seen the comments on .exe) I only have:

Cardfile.exe 91kb application - which I open first
Address.crd 134kb crd file - my address book which I then open through the
above

The only other file I have is
Cards.dll 146kb Application extension - which I never touch (it's just come
with me along the way)

All these files are in My Documents. In C:Program Files, I have no cardfile
folder. I have NOT installed CardSpace.

Does that change anything?

I'll let you know how it goes.

the changes, they are set for the program called CardSpace, which took
away your settings for CardFile because they each use .crd datafiles.
Since you do not want to use CardSpace, then the following should work
for CardFile.

For me
to open this file, I have to open the application (1.) first and then
use it to open this address file.

Sounds right; Been there, Done that.

I'm going to make up paths here. Change the paths to match your own
folder/file names instead.

-- Cardfile.exe is located in c:\Program Files\Cardfile\, right? The
folder Cardfile contains the file cardfile.exe. The full path would be:
"C:\Program Files\Cardfile\cardfile.exe". The quotes are necessary
because there is a space used in one of the folders; namely Program
Files. Always remember the quotes.
C:
Program Files
Cardfile
Cardfile.exe


-- Usually the data files for Cardfile (the *.crd files) default
location is the same as the program, but not necessarily. For this
example, let's keep them in the same folder; "C:\Program
Files\Cardfile\fname.crd. Where "fname" is the name you decided to use
for the data file.


OK, let's take it from where we know you have cardfile.exe in the
c:\program files\cardfile\ folder. In Explorer, it'll look something
like this:

C:
Program Files
Cardfile
cardfile.exe
fname.crd

If you don't have an fname.crd there, create one. It's just a text
file.

-- Open Notepad and place one space at the beginning of the page;
nothing else.
-- Save the file to C:\Program Files\Cardfile\fname.crd where fname
is any name of your choosing. To keep from saving it with a .txt
extension, in the Save As Type bottom box, choose "*.* All Files"
and then type in the full filename, fname.crd and click Save or OK,
whichever it is.

Back to windows Explorer; find C:\Program Files\Cardfile\fname.crd and

-- Highlight (click on) fname.crd, or whatever filename you used.
"fname" is OK for a filename if you want to. It can always be Renamed
later on.
-- Right click on fname.crd and note the list of options that drops
down.
-- Highlight Send To in that list that dropped down and then
click on "Desktop (Create Shortcut). There should be a shortcut for
fname,crd on the desktop now. For now it won't do much if you click on
it.

SET THE FILE ASSOCIATION:
-- In windows Explorer, click Tools; Folder Options.
-- In Folder Options, click the File Types tab.
-- If there is already a .crd entry, click Change
-- If there is no .crd entry, click NEW and add the CRD extenstion
(WITHOUT the dot (.)).
-- Now there is a CRD entry to work on.
-- Find the CRD entry
-- Click Change
-- Fill in the required data by browsing to cardfile.exe and click on
it, then click OK. If it's not in the list, which it probably isn't,
then use the Browser feature to naviaget to the cardfile.exe file and
choos it that way.

SET COMPATABILITY:
MIght's well save a later question and set the compatability mode for
it right now. Assuming your cardfile.exe is the one that came from
windows 95 or 98, you should set the compatability accordingly.
This MAY NOT be necessary; it wasn't for me, but sometimes it helps
if things don't run quite right:

-- Using Windows Explorer again, go to cardfile.exe again, which is in
c:\program files\cardfile\.
-- RIGHT click on cardfile.exe.
-- In the list of options that drops down, click on Properties and the
properties window will open.
-- Click on the tab that says "Compatability".
-- Click "Run this program in compatability mode for:"
-- Click the down arrow on the right of the box,
-- Choose windows 95 or windows 98, whichever version your
cardfile came from. If you aren't sure, start with win95; it should
work for both. If not, then try win98.
-------------------------

You should now be able to click the fname.crd icon on the desktop that
you made and start cardfile which will open with fname.crd displayed. If
you already have a cardfile data file, then use that instead for your
fname.crd. fname.crd was just a placeholder to let things get started
but if you have a real file, then go ahead and use that instead. Just
be sure to use a copy of it, not the original - mistakes do happen.

I've done my best to not leave anything out here, but if I have, you'll
discover it simply by being sure to read each screen before you leave
it. Most of what I've said here is also given in the various dialog
boxes as you go through these steps, but hopefully with a bit better
context.

If it still doesn't work, be sure to be as explicit as you can when you
describe what happened when and how. Quote the full text of any error
messages and exactly what step you performed when you got the message,
and what you did next. Too much data is not a problem.


What I have tried:
- I have tried to create a shortcut to the address file (2.) above
and then change the target to "C:\Program Files\CARDFILE \Rolodex
address.crd" but a. It cannot find the target and
b. I do not have this Rolodex system you mention (I think..!)

That should also have worked. The only difference between this and all
the above is that you have to create such a shortcut every time you want
to do something different.
You should NOT have used MY path with Rolodex in it, but instead YOUR
OWN path to where the files are. Still using the same example file
structure as above, the path in that case would be:

"C:\program files\cardfile\cardfile.exe" "C:\program
files\cardfile\fname.crd" --- INCLUDE these quotes!
Remember, this is an EXAMPLE and I made up the path, although it should
work if you do things exactly as I stated them. If, for instance you
wanted to use a folder called "Phone Numbers" instead of "Cardfile",
they you'd have to replace the 'cardfile" in the line above to "Phone
Numbers" (no quotes, just used them for emphasis).
Same for fname.crd. If your file was named, say, Port Skewitt
Area.crd, then you're replace fname.crd with Port Skewitt Area.crd.
See what I mean? You have to be sure to use YOUR file and folder names,
not mine.

If you're still having troubles and can't get it to work, I suggest we
take the converstaion off-group so we can use HTML e-mails and include
graphic images of these things. It's hard to describe pictorially
things that are so much clearer in an image.
Then once we get it working right, you can reply back to the group
with what the final outcome was and whether you got things going.
If you'd like to go offgroup, let me know and I'll give you a
temporary address you can use to contact me. You'll have to do the same
for me of course and I recommend you also use a temporary or throw-away
address.

The easiest way to fix it is to simply change the file association.
Go to the .crd entry and you'll find it's set for CardSpace or
whatever was added. Simply change the association back to CardFile
and you'll be set to go. The only change MS made was to the file
association for .crd.

Open Windows Explorer. It doesn't matter to what drive or folder;
any place is OK to use.
-- Click Tools; Folder Options.

-- Click Change and set it to use Cardfile instead of CardSpace or
whatever it is now.

If there is NO entry for CRD, then click New and create one.
Just follow the instructions; browse to it, add it so it'll open

Maybe the best way:
Create your own Shortcut to it. Whatever the name of your cardfile
data file is, say it's "fname.crd", make a new Shortcut and use the
following for the Shortcut TARGET:

"C:\Program Files\CARDFILE \Rolodex fname.crd"

And again, you should be ready to go. I have two "rolodexes" so I
have two shortcuts; one to the fname.crd for each file. My wife and
I keep our own lists. Don't forget to use the quotes!
