It`s the last version which supports older processors. One of my
workstatons is a Dell, about 10 years old, which would not run newer
VMWare versions.

Then don't you run into the same problem, that - assuming your Dell is
running W10 - you won't be able to do the 2004 upgrade?

Fokke

That depends on whether it's an EPT/SLAT/VT-X/Hyper-V problem,
versus an instruction set problem.

As I wrote, I froze my host (Win 10). I won`t update as long as
possible. The host is only running 2-3 VMs (the Windows 10-VM ist
updated from time to time, the Linux VM more often). I don`t see any
reason to update the host.

Genuine question. What does VMware do for the $180 over what you can get
for free with Virtual Box? I use VMs for a bit of light testing and have
not noticed anything missing that I'd be willing to pay for.

I use VMWare for many years and have a lot of virtual systems. First of
all I didn't know about Virtual Box, and if I would have known it, how
could I transfer all my systems to Virtual Box?

Vbox reads OVA images which VMware can export to.

The only thing I'd watch for, is activation issue.

That's if the VMs have Windows installs with actual
keys used to authorize them.

Todd has had a problem with this.

I don't use keys for my temporary installs in VM-land.
And so I wouldn't be likely to run into such a problem.
I would consider doing such a thing to be "risky", because
no one at MS would give a rats ass if my installation
suddenly said "Not Genuine". The risk is going to be
mostly on your shoulders. Even though activation issues
should receive "Free Support" from MS.

pretty much everything other than windows.

lity_Guide.pdf

in particular, virtual box support for ubuntu, debian and mac os is not
at all current, supporting nothing newer than versions from 5-10 years
ago, depending on os.

Well that is BS right there. I have the latest Ubuntu 20.04 LTS clients
on this machine as I workout the next best desktop configuration desktop
for the library...

Yabbut that is a MS issue not VirtualBox or VMWare issue.

Same. I've installed many versions of Linux in VBox with no issues. I did
an old version of ubuntu once to get some old software working, but other
than that it's always been a current version.

After running Windows 10 1909 for 7 days, I upgraded to 2004 earlier today.
My VMware v14 continued to work fine, so I guess I won't be upgrading at
this time.
