Accessing the security tab on a partitioned drive

Hi there,

I've just discovered a problem that I never noticed before. We have 1hard
drive in our PCs partitioned so the C drive is the system partition and the D
drive is for data that students can save files and folders into. OS on PCs is
Win XP Pro SP3 and all PCs are in a Windows networked domain.

Students want to be able to apply NTFS file permissions to the folders they
create on the D drive but when they create the folder and select properties
the security tab isn't there. The only tabs there are general and customise.
They need this so other people can’t modify or delete their work in the
folders they create on the partitioned D drive.

I'm not really sure why this is - perhaps there is a group policy in place
stopping this or some other reason?!?!!?

So any help/advise welcome and if you think it is a group policy preventing
them from accessing the security tab on the D drive please let me now what GP
it is.

Also is it possible to have different rights for students on the C partition
and the D partition i.e. give the students the right to create and apply
folder permissions on the D partition and not the C partition?

Sounds like Simple File Sharing is turned on.

off SFS students still don't have access to the security tab when the login,
although I as an admin does have access to the required tab.

Any other ideas/suggestions welcome!

Also re the second question in my post is it possible for students to have
different access rights/permissions on the D partition rather that on the C
partition - if so how is this done.

Sorry to reply to myself but just noticed you said that as an admin you
could see the tab, so it's not a FAT32 problem.

Are these systems part of a domain? Could a Group Policy be in effect? See

Thanks for you replies!

I managed to check that article out and unfortunately there isn't a GP in
place that is stopping the security tab being displayed.

I still have no idea why standard users cannot access this tab to apply
their own security to the folders they create.

As a work around I have scripted out a folder and applied the permissions
for their class group and removed any access from other students but I would
still like to find out why this security tab isn't there.

Again any help by anyone would be greatly appreciated!
