Can't save file read only attrib
"Thorsten Matzner" wrote: Albert wrote: I can't save files to any directries on Win XP after I installed the OS updates. The folders attributes is marked green on the read only attrib and when I clear it, it comes back and it doesn't let me save. Im login as administor, so thats not the problem. Please help. The attribute is not the problem here. See "You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326549). -- (tm) My problem is with folders also but what I want to do is to delete some folders. When I right click and delete, I get the following message "cannot delete xxx: It is being used by another person or program, Close any program that might be using the file and try again." I have closed all program in any way related to xxx and tried again. Stil the same error message. When I right click on properties, I see that read only is checked. I uncheck it and then click apply. When I open it again, the read only is checked again. Thorsten, you suggested that read only is not the problem. I read the link that you mentioned but it seemed to say in one place that windows explorer ignored the read ony attribute and in another place that there is no read only attribute in the properties box. And then it tells me to use the cmd command, which I dont really understand. I really feel stupid. what do I do? |

Can't save file read only attrib
To make certain a file or folder is having it's read-only attribute removed:- open a "Command Prompt" (type [cmd.exe] into the Run box on the Start Menu) and type the following command : attrib -r "My Folder" ....where you must replace the words "My Folder" for the folder (or file) name. However, may I suggest that your problems could being caused by folder "encryption" . If any folders (or files) have been encrypted using Window's built-in file encryption and then you have changed your password files within encrypted folders will have been lost to you and access denied messages will be all you get. You would also get "access denied" messages if (even as administrator) encrypted files / folders are tried to be accessed by anyone other than the owner [user] that owns them. In that case - log on as that user to overwrite any files. I say that this may be the cause because of something you wrote in your post concerning "...attribute is marked green..." green being the color such encrypted files and / or folders are shown in after encryption. == Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :-) "jexie" wrote in message ... (I've just - when I got down to this point - noticed that you've top-posted!) The person who had the green attributes was Albert, not jexie. Also, Albert said the attributes are green, not the file/folder itself; I'm not sure what he meant by that, but I'm assuming (possibly wrongly) that he means something in the properties box, rather than the name as shown in explorer. (I think I know what you mean there - I haven't seen green, but I've seen blue for compressed, where the file/folder name itself is shown in a different colour to the others next to it.) == Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :-) "jexie" wrote in message ...
