Default Update KB951847 will not install

Windows update keeps nagging me to install this update but it does not
install.
I get:
"Some updates could not be installed"
"The following updates were not installed"
"Microsoft .NET.... (KB951847)x86"
No other error messages to give me a clue why it doesn't install.
Disabled AVG virus protection but it didn't help.
Tried in safe mode but it didn't work either.
How do I get out from this annoyance?
Thanks,
Nathan

Have you looked at your Windows Event Viewer? If an update is not for
your system, then an entry in the "System" portion will say so. Usually
this is shown with a yellow triangle 'warning'.

If this is the case, you can uncheck the update next time it comes up,
When you OK the updates a dialog box will appear telling you that update
"KBwhatever" will not be installed; check (or uncheck - I don't
remember) the box for 'hide this update'. you won't see it again.

Unfortunately this is all related to RDP session and KB969947 not much
to do with my problem.
I thought that Microsoft will be a little more helpful here.

Have you asked anyone at Microsoft yet?

List of changes and fixed issues in the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951847

I'd do this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/

Whether or not it sounds like your issue.

I'd also recommend the following:

Start button -- RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
-- type in:
winver
-- Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name and edition) while the line starting with the word
"version" will give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response
to this message verbatim. No paraphrasing - instead - ensure
character-for-character copying.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan with the following
(freeware version):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Reboot and logon as administrative user.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan with the following
(freeware version):

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

Reboot and logon as administrative user.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

Reboot.

winver result:
WindowsXP Professional
Version 5.1(Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435:Service Pack 3

I ran MSRT manually on the Quick scan option and it showed no problems.
It's running now the Full Scan option.

Haven't done yet the other scans.

This is a hand-me-down laptop. It lists two users: Abe and Abe
Administrator. The Abe Administrator has a password which neither I nor
the original owner knows. When I looked at User Accounts it seems that
just Abe has administrative privileges and this is the only way that I
can log on. I hope that this will be OK.

Thank you so much for helping.

I did all spyware/malware removal and tried to follow the instruction
here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/
Could not uninstall one version... got a warning that something is
shared and something might not work.
Installed OK through .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
When tried to install .NET Framework 2.0 got an message that it can not
be installed because is not compatible with previous version.
Quite frustrating... feel like getting a Mac or switching to Ubuntu.
Is there a simple way out of this mess? Do I really need .NET Framework 3.5?
Thanks,
