All went well except (as I already knew) it will not update until I
install a newer browser. The funny thing is I could not go to the
Microsoft site to download it with IE8.

I had IE11 on a USB stick but I just thought this funny.

Because the CPU does not have SSE2 I could neither install Firefox or
Chrome.

Maybe one of my friends can still use the machine.

Anyone know a decent browser I could put on a low spec machine like this?

There's a reference here to FF49 working without SSE2 support.
Firefox versions after that might need SSE2.

The Firefox releases are available if you want to spend the time testing.

Thank you.

Once I load an alternate browser I'm going to give the machine away if I
can find a taker.

Why not reinstall XP, keep it offline and use it to test
software (a lot of malware can detect a VM) ?
I have a spare just for that.
OR you could boot a Linux-CD firewall on it and keep track of
all your network activity. If it's hacked, just reboot. A
HD/keyboard/screen/graphical card would be un-necessary.Just two
network cards, one of which is probably built into the MB ....

Or a single network card, just to get things going and to prove the
concept. A second NIC can be added later, in order to increase the
available bandwidth.

I meant

Instead of :

User's PC/laptop --- Internet modem or whatever.

This:

User's PC/laptop --- NIC1(on Firewall) - Firewall and
Monitoring -- NIC 2(on Firewall) ---- Internet modem or whatever.

You can access the logs on the firewall through https or (bit
primitive) something like PuTTY. Of course, since the firewall has no
HD, the logs would be limited to amount of RAM and disappear when you
reboot the firewall. Which is a good thing. If it's hacked, nothing
remains after a re-boot. The CD or DVD is read-only.

I used to have a setup like that with a dist based on Coyote
(called BrazilFW). That was in the dialup days.
Wow, the project is still active:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/brazilfw/

133 downloads this week !!!
I thought it was dead.

No, I knew that's what you meant. I was just pointing out that you can
set up a firewall, router, load balancer, whatever, using a single NIC.
The operation is the same with one NIC versus two versus more than two,
although the configuration does change slightly. More than one NIC gives
you more throughput capability, but no more 'firewall' than a single
NIC.

You can access the logs on the firewall through https or (bit
primitive) something like PuTTY. Of course, since the firewall has no
HD, the logs would be limited to amount of RAM and disappear when you
reboot the firewall. Which is a good thing. If it's hacked, nothing

I haven't heard of that project, but it's cool that it's still around. I
tend to think of pfSense when I need a firewall or a router, especially
since pfSense also comes as a VM image.

No. Philo is a big boy now; maybe he'll use it on another computer.

So you didn't even bother to read his post ? He's not

You have no idea at all of what Philo may or may not like.

I very much doubt that you are even aware that he's just repaired a
1930s radio for a friend. He's a great practical man, good with
computers and photography, and I think of him as a friend. He's
certainly not afraid of HIS shadow, Shadow!

It's to the point where a dual core machine with 8 gigs of RAM is an
antique.

All went well except (as I already knew) it will not update until I
install a newer browser. The funny thing is I could not go to the
Microsoft site to download it with IE8.

I had IE11 on a USB stick but I just thought this funny.

Because the CPU does not have SSE2 I could neither install Firefox or
Chrome.

I've been playing with this, Philo

//What are the system requirements to install Brave?
Windows

Â*Â*Â*Â* An Intel Pentium 4 processor or later that's SSE2 capable//

Â*Â*Â*Â*You didn't even bother to read the specs, did you ?

No. Philo is a big boy now; maybe he'll use it on another computer.

Yep.

Will try Brave Browser for sure.

After I got Win7 updated the machine came up with a green screen after
a reboot. Not a corrupted OS as even the BIOS screen was green.

The machine had on-board video but when I simply installed a
card,...same green screen.

Machine going to the recyclers

Thanks for the update. I had a tear in my eye when I took me old iMac to
the tip! :-(

Btw, here's another browser you might like to play with:
https://vivaldi.com

Cheers! :-)

I already use Vivaldi, thanks
