Android with its Linux kernel is the most used operative system
worldwide:
https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share

Android will continue to grow faster than Windows, IMHO.

"More than 50% of VM cores runs Linux on Azure

Linux-based images comprise 60% of Azure Marketplace images

Top 100 Microsoft customers deploy Linux workloads on Azure

Azure Tuned Kernels provide 25% faster network throughput

Microsoft supports all major Linux distros, like:

Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu, Oracle Linux, Debian, CentOS, CoreOS,
and OpenSUSE (Related: Azure also supports FreeBSD)

Azure offers two natively supported managed Kubernetes
orchestration services: Azure Kubernetes Service, and
Azure Red Hat OpenShift
"

Azure is the future of the company, and yes, they're
paying attention.

Yep, it's all about drivers, and applications users are used to.

Windows isn't going anywhere. Android is an ultraport operating system,
not a desktop operating system.

I was rooting for the breakup of Microsoft, in ~1998. In hindsight, the
decision was correct (unless they just lucked out). I recall them
mentioning ultraport devices. As it turned out, ultraports flourished,
so Microsoft does not control every type of personal computer. Now that
decision seems justified, no problem now.

True.

It's kinda stuck in neutral.

Good Guy is a W/10 shill and he doesn't realize most big server farms
run Linux.

Not only that, seeing '5nines' (in https://build5nines.com/...) in a
*Windows* thread is quite funny.

Don't pity the OS. Pity the users of that OS, for thingking that such
software is actually useful.

There seems to be a lot of discussion recently over Apple's 30%-take
from the sale of every app built for an Apple device (which are
apparently necessarily purchased through Apple's "App Store"). Many
developers claim "monopoly". I am not a developer but from what I have
seen and heard, I tend to side with them.

google and microsoft app stores also take 30%, all of which include
hosting, download bandwidth, app discovery, updates, payment
processing, handling fraud, taxes, currency conversions and more.

using the app store isn't required. there are alternate distribution
methods, except that those costs don't go away. which one is more
profitable depends on many factors.

in the old days of boxed software, the publishers, distributors and
stores all took a cut, which totaled much more than 30%.

I can buy a Kindle ebook from inside the Android Kindle app. And I can buy a
Kindle ebook from inside the Windows Kindle app.

But I can't buy an ebook from inside the iOS Kindle app. I have to transfer
to the Safari browser to buy it from the Amazon site. I've read that it's
because Amazon doesn't want to pay Apple's fee. When the big guys have a
****ing contest it's a PITA for the customer...

That's a reasonable point, but at least the 30% was "spread around".
The developers claim Apple is monopolistic in the way it works with
them, and that they have few other options "on the i-phone platform".
Maybe we should, judicially, treat the i-phone platform like the
railroads? Disclaimer: I have never bought an i-anything, but I know
people who seem addicted to such devices. Me, I read newsgroups through
Usenet : )

Turns out you can't buy an ebook from inside the Windows Kindle app. It
sends you to a browser too. I lied (memory failure). But I can't find
out why. Probably same as Apple...
