WinXP Does Not Recognize DVD-RW Discs
Win XP does not recognize DVD-RW discs. This is a problem Microsoft know
about (KB Article 818733), but how do I fix it? When I say it doesn't recognise the disc, let me elaborate. The drive can read and write correctly to CDs, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs. I can, using other software, write to a DVD-RW. But I can't retrieve the data as when I try to view the contents of the DVD-RW disc in Windows Explorer I get an error message saying "Incorrect Function". Also when a DVD-RW disc is put in the drive, the drive icon in Windows Explorer changes from "DVD-RW Drive" to "CD Drive", which it clearly isn't. They say on the KB article there is a fix available, but how can I get it? They don't offer a link to it. They say I must contact the manufacturer of my PC (as windows was pre-installed) but they [Compaq via HP Support UK] won't help as the drive was bought seperately from the PC. Also, on the article details they run through OS's affected. I'm now on XP Home SP2 which isn't listed, and still have the problem. So it looks like this should have been fixed in SP2. I've tried un-installing and re-installing the drive since my SP2 upgrade to see if it will help. No luck. Anyone have any suggestions please? |

You might try the SP2 help page as the knowledge base article does indeed say it should have been fixed in the "next" service pack. Buccaneer |
