Default FAO the MS-MVP's/fax post sp2 update

Hi Russ & David, I have exactly the same problem. I went to the control
panel-add/remove programs-ad/remove windows components and tried to load
the fax software but it does seem to be there at all.

The funny part is that it was there earlier, when I was using office 2000. I
installed office 2003 and it seems to have dissappeared.

Please help??

The problem is this one:

the fax won't install, it either says insert xp disc (but most people
have it preinstalled, and the files are already in the c:\i386 folder),
or if you get pass that you get the "ghost" fax where it's there for a
split second and then disappears.

Click on the Windows Start Menu.
2. Click Run.

3. Type esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb

Explain in more detail what you are doing and what happens.
Your Office version would not be in play here.

Russ, thank you for responsing.
I have been using my windows fax which was showing up as an option when I
clicked on the print button.

Now I find that the fax option is not there. I don't exactly remember at
what point it did the dissappearing act, probably after I uninstalled my old
Office 2000 and installed Office 2003 but I am not sure.

So now I went to Control panel-add/remove programs-add/remove windows
components. I check the box (which was unchecked) for fax service and click
next. This should have installed the fax but doesn't. It asks for the CD-ROM,
which I don't have as the PC was pre-installed.

(I have a very inquisitive 4 year old son who might have done something at
some time but I can't be sure).

When the installation routine is unable to find the necessary installation
files (even when directed to the appropriate i386 Folder) it usually means
that the installation files are compressed. This is often the case when the
files are pre-copied by a manufacturer on the hard drive. If you do a search
for the files that the installation routine claims are missing (fxsapi.dll
and fxcfgwz.dll) you won't find them, but you will find fxsapi.dl_ and
fxcfgwz.dl_.
Can you find these?

Several people have successfully fixed this problem with this article:

Where did you find it? Your OEM is responsible for providing your access to
these files.

Russ, thank you for responsing.
I have been using my windows fax which was showing up as an option when
I
clicked on the print button.

Now I find that the fax option is not there. I don't exactly remember
at
what point it did the dissappearing act, probably after I uninstalled
my
old
Office 2000 and installed Office 2003 but I am not sure.

So now I went to Control panel-add/remove programs-add/remove windows
components. I check the box (which was unchecked) for fax service and
click
next. This should have installed the fax but doesn't. It asks for the
CD-ROM,
which I don't have as the PC was pre-installed.

(I have a very inquisitive 4 year old son who might have done something
at
some time but I can't be sure).

As I said before, the fax was working fine before, so all relevant files must
have been there earlier. The fax is not working now as explained before. This

There are several reasons these installations fail (and many have no
solutions).
The exact steps that reproduced your problem are essential in trying to
troubleshoot it. For example, what was the original source of the
installation files? How did you originally install the Fax program? What
changes did you make to your system between the time you first installed fax
and this time? What steps are you using to try to install fax and what
happens when you try?
The steps Hal has posted only apply to installation failures brought on by
the interval installation of SP2. Other causes have other solutions.

Just for final clarification for anyone who may get confused by this and
similar threads.
There are (at least) 2 separate issues being discussed he
1. When a user gets a prompt from the installation routine that it cannot
find the necessary files, (even when directed to the appropriate i386
Folder) it may mean that the installation files are compressed. This is
often the case when the files are pre-copied by a manufacturer on the hard
drive. If you do a search for the files that the installation routine claims
are missing (fxsapi.dll and fxcfgwz.dll) you won't find them, but you will
find fxsapi.dl_ and fxcfgwz.dl_. These are compressed DLL files and will
need to be decompressed. Double click on them and you will get a prompt for
the file to use to open them. Click on BROWSE. and select Win32 Cabinet
Self-Extractor, which is in the system folder. With any luck it will
uncompress them all and make them visible as DLL files. The install routine
still may not find these files. If so, then you must manually direct the
installation routine to the i386 folder that contains these extracted files.
Ultimately, solutions to this problem may have to come from the OEM.
2. Many users who have updated an older version of Windows XP to SP2 before
they try to install the fax service appear to be encountering a completely
different problem installing the fax service. In these cases there is no
error message that the installation routine cannot find the necessary files.
The installation appears to proceed without error, but when it completes
there is no fax printer apparent and any attempt to send a fax results in
this error message "Fax server information cannot be retrieved. The Fax
Wizard will now close." This problem appears to occur because the security
data base is corrupted as documented he
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/

Note that this article describes a hotfix that users can obtain that might
fix the problem (which has yet to be confirmed) and that Microsoft does NOT
recommend simply running the Esentutl.exe utility to recover from security
database corruption. In addition, the fax developers have worked on some
modifications to the fxsocm.inf file that might permit installation of the
fax service. This is an unsupported workaround that I can provide offline
for use at your own risk if you provide a valid email address and can accept
zip files as attachments.

Guys,

I am having similar problems, not specifically related to the fax component.
Also seems to affect other windows components when you try to add them, such
as "other network services", etc.

I have confirmed that it is a corrupt secedit.sdb file that causes the
problem (when trying to add a component you are constantly prompted for the
source files, even though they are on the hard drive and in a valid source
path). Also, it isn't a problem with compressed/missing source files as
previously suggested.

If I follow the MS KB article 884018 and remove the corrupt secedit.sdb file
and generate a new one, the problem is resolved, I can add the components.
The issue I then have is that by generating a new secedit.sdb database I am
reverting my XP machine to "out the box" settings (registry, permissions,
user rights, etc). This may break existing apps/services already installed on
the machine.

I have logged a call with Microsoft support - they are sending me the SP2
