How do I create a shortcut to Task Manager? It's hard to get to using
Control Panel, and I can't find any options to create a shortcut.

Thank you,

Jo-Anne

Seems like a generic shortcut pointing to taskmgr.exe should work.

Right click on the Taskbar and you can open it there. Ctrl+Al=+Delete works
too.

CTRL-SH-ESC opens Task Manager (Win 8 :-)

Win7 too. Didn't know that.

Thank you, Alek. Works in Win7 too. I wish Microsoft hadn't come up with
a new combo. CTRL-ALT-DEL worked in XP; now it brings up options for
shutting down the computer.

Thank you, Bruce. I hadn't noticed right-click being an option.
CTRL-ALT-DEL, however, doesn't work in Win7 (at least not on my new
computer); it brings up Shutdown options.

Done. Thank you, Char. Could you also tell me how I can get extensions
to show up? All I saw was taskmgr without the .exe. I have a vague
memory that there's a way in earlier versions of Windows.

Couple of ways. Open Windows Explorer and click on the Organize button, then
select 'Folder and Search Options'. Or, select Tools from the menu and then
Folder Options. Once there, select the View tab, then clear the check box
for "Hide extensions for known filetypes".

Hi, Jo-Anne.

...how I can get extensions to show up? All I saw was taskmgr without the
.exe.

It's in "Folder Options" - and how to get to there from here has changed a
little since Win7. In Win8.1, I can still open Control Panel | Appearance
and Personalization | Folder Options. It's on the View tab under Files and
Folders. "Hide extensions for known file types" is checked by default; just
UNcheck that.

It has been a couple of years since I last installed Windows, but there are
a few settings that I always change right from the start. This is one of
them. Another is just below that: "Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)". But this one asks "Are you sure?" I also Show hidden
files, folders and drives and don't Hide empty drives.

The default settings are/were intended to protect newbies from themselves,
but I always worried that hiding extensions created danger, especially for
newbies. I haven't seen Win10 yet, but I've heard that MS is finally
reversing the default on this.

Thank you, RC. Those are exactly the things I change too. I can't
imagine how anyone could think, for example, that eliminating the
extensions is a good idea. One other thing I need to do is uncheck Autoplay.

Possibly, they are copying Apple. Not showing the extensions there has
been the norm for years. It's also one of the first things I changed
when I bought my Mac.

One other thing I need to do is uncheck Autoplay.

Easiest is to right click on the tool bar instead of using a shortcut
icon because then one does not have to minimize open windows

The question is not "how", but "why".

Just press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
