Default Back Up

Thanks for the link to the Windows back up utility. Windows XP came
preinstalled on my laptop. The only disks I have are system recovery disks
from Hewlett Packard. Are these the correct disks?

Those are the correct disks.
However I think you do not have the necessary files on those CDs.
HP has decided their customers do not need those optional files.
If you want a back-up utility, you need to get a 3rd party tool.

Well... If your "recovery disks from Hewlett Packard"
contain the following folder, then maybe yes:

CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

If they does not contain the folder perhaps the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article answers your
question:
