Default home networking set up xp tp me

Followed Microsoft Knowledge Base 826812 Connecting XP to
ME Home Networking, Install TCP/IP on ME computer. But
it doesn't install. All I get on reboot is a networking
diconnect icon. Cannot get the computers to recognize
MSHOME network, suspect the protocols are different. The
article above adresses that but it doesn't work for me.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
