Win 8 on a new Acer Aspire V5-571 Laptop, and Office 2010 removing.
Hi all,
I am buying a new Acer Aspire V5-571 Laptop. With Win 8 on it. The spec says it has Microsoft Office 2010 preloaded and to purchase a key if wanting to use it. I have a paid for Office 2007 full suite of programmes and a key for it, I will remove it from my older Win XP computer. Will Office 2010 be fully installed and require removing before I install my Office 2007, or does it install only when it is activated? I expect there will be some crap programmes on it, if anyone knows the Acer Aspire V5-571 are there any I should not remove? Thanks for any help, Mick IOW. |

I don't know why Microsoft has done it this way, but you can only have one version of Office per OS. Not true. The only problem I've encountered with installing multiple copies of Office is that you can't run multiple copies of Outlook. That said, I seem to recall you need to do them from oldest to newest, like with Windows versions, so I don't know if the OP can install the older version of Office since the new version is already installed. And since the OP doesn't intend to use the newer version, there is no reason not to uninstall it first. -- Zaphod "Yeah. I have an Aspire V3-731, and was surprised at the amount of bloatware it DOESN'T have. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of it, but nowhere near what I'm used to seeing on HP and (older) Compaq laptops. I got rid of most of it, but some of it is necessary or at least likable. I kept Dolby Home Theater (nice sound customization with it) and almost all of the Intel add-ons. Skype was included if you want it. And one of the Acer programs you must keep if you want the FN keys to work correctly is Launch Manager. There's only the Win7 version of it, but it works well on Win8 as-is (since yours has Win8 from the factory, you won't have to worry about that). It's kind of a pick-and-Google. Some of the programs I've never heard of, like Evernote and Cyberlink MediaEspresso. I got rid of Evernote, but still haven't made up my mind on the Cyberlink program. Once I cleaned off all the crapware, I cloned the drive and put it on a shelf. Don't know why I still have that since I've made a number of disk images since :-) I don't recall if Office of any flavor was on mine, but since I own a copy of Office Pro 2003, I installed what I wanted from it. My guess is if it was included, it was either Starter or a trial version. -- SC Tom |

I don't know why Microsoft has done it this way, but you can only have one version of Office per OS. Since you don't have a key for Office 2010, you would be stuck with Office 2010 Starter I am assuming. And that might not work out for you as full blown Office 2007 would be better. So you must uninstall Office 2010 first, then install Office 2007. Incorrect on the first, correct on the second. Side-by-side installations of Office have been permitted for Office for years (nine versions including the current 2013) as long as the later version is installed after the earlier version. The only limitation is Outlook. Only one version of Outlook can exist on the same installed o/s thus installing any later version of Outlook (if chosen to be installed) will always replace the prior Outlook version even if one follows the correct method to install a later version of Office for a side-by-side configuration. In the case of the op with the pre-installed version (trial or OEM bundled non-trial version)....the op should remove Office 2010, shutdown/restart/verify Office 2010 and other possible preinstalled components (Hotmail Connector, Social Connector, Social Provider for Messenger, Facebook, etc) are not present in Programs and Features and then install Office 2007. If other components mentioned above are present (sometime preinstalled by OEM) for best results they should be removed via Programs and Features before attempting to install Office 2007. -- ....winston msft mvp |

Well how come then, on a x64 system, having 2007 installed then update to 2010 it needs to uninstall 2007 before accepting 2010. Well I don't know. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2121447 where MS tells you how to do it. My best guess is that the 2007 Office was 32-bit and the 2010 Office was 64-bit, because MS says: "There is no support for running 64-bit versions of Office 2010 suites or programs with any 32-bit version of Office on the same computer. The Setup program will detect that you have previous 32-bit versions of Office programs on your computer and will require that they are removed before you can install Office 2010 64-bit." I know you can't have more than one version of Office 95, 97, 2000, XP, or 2003 on the same Windows. I am not sure of 2007, 2010, or 2012. and why would you want to? Because they have taken some features away from newer versions. ;-) Get with the programme. |
