Default Cannot browse workgroup

I get the following error when I try to browse my
workgroup (all computers using Win XP Pro):

"Workgroup" is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available.

I am able to browse the computers by using their IP
address, however I cannot do this by using their computer
name. Likewise for pinging the computers.

I have ensured that all firewalls are disabled. I have
checked the permissions to the best of my ability. I
have restarted the computer browsing service. NetBIOS
over TCP/IP is enabled.

I have gone through all the knowledge base articles that
I could find. I would greatly appreciate some help.

Thanks.

Mike

I have the same problem, have tried everything you have and many others, even reformatted the disc and reloaded xp pro on one computer, it worked for a while then stopped working again giving that same access denied error. A system restore to a time when
I was sure it was working fixed it but again later would stop working. no firewalls in use. norton antivirus only. I have seen several other posts with similar problem end with no solution. Any help greatly appreciated. Is there a hidden firewall I
should be looking for because it seems that is what is happening. One time it was after a windows update and I made sure the xp firewall was disabled but that was not the problem. ONe time it seemed to happen after rebooting the computer. I have spybo
t and adaware on the computer but cannot see how they could cause the problem. both computers connected to DSL router and running simple file sharing on xp pro computers.

Thanks for the idea! I am having the same problem with a
new laptop I added to my home network, i.e.,
\\computername is not accessible. Neither machine could
access the other. I just diabled Norton Internet Security
on the new machine and all works fine. So I'm off to
Symantec to find out the correct settings for NIS.

Mike,

I get the exact same error. We have a peer to peer network of about 30
computers. This problem only started about a 4 days ago. Did the latest
MS security patch change something?

I can find computers by searching by computer name and any mapped drives
to another computer connect quickly. We also use TCP/IP to connect to a
Unix and Linux based system and these still work fine.

A have also searched the knowledge base and enabled netbios for tcp and
nothing changes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Chris
