Hi folks,

We've all seen this before, you click the Start Button and choose Restart,
only to get this message. Most of the time, it tells you what the offending
app is, and you can hit Cancel and go back to close it properly. Well, in my
case....I get the same message, only there is NO way to identify the app!
There is no name, no description, just a generic icon, nothing to go on. If
I wait a few seconds (hoping the mystery app will actually close) I get
thrown back to the desktop like nothing happened.

The only way that I can complete the Restart is to chose the "Restart
Anyway" option, and it's all normal from there. Is there *any* way to
discover the culprit?

As always, thanks in advance!

Would the powercfg -energy thing know ?

Normally, you'd shoot from the hip and say "Task Manager",
but of course it could be a service, or it could be
some of those ugly things like "backgroundhost", "dllhost",
"hostofthemonthclub", all mechanisms Microsoft invented to
hide the thing they're running. One of those, presumably,
might refuse to quit too.

Sysinternals.com Process Explorer has all sorts of info,
and doing "Properties" on an entry, might tell you what
hides behind a DLLHost. Or, what's in a SVCHOST. To get
the most value from Process Explorer, you can Run it as
Administrator. One thing that does, is allows the Threads
display to show information. Without Admin the tool
cannot burrow into the Thread info.

The behavior of Shutdown has varied from time to time.
I've had experiences here, where it doesn't matter what
button you push - even Cancel causes the shutdown to
succeed. It wouldn't throw me back to the desktop. But
behaviors like this could change after any Update, and
maybe jamming up like that is considered "design intent".

Hi Paul!

I did try Task Manager the very first time this happened, but of course it
didn't show any apps running at all except Task Manager. g

I'll look into this ProccessExplorer soon, thanks for the tip.
Btw, this has never happened with Shutdown, only Restart if that means
anything.

Thanks again!
