Default Cannot read files from removed XP hard drive - access privileges

My Gateway XP computer was damaged and did not operate.
I removed the hard drive.
I purchased a hard drive enclosure, AirLink 101
I attached my Gateway XP hard drive into the AirLink 101
I plugged the AirLink into my other laptop, a Gateway Vista.
I can read and open the files that were already installed on it when I
purchased it, i.e. the example picture files that are on computers when you
purchase them.
When I try to open files that I created such as MS Excel, MS Word, and
picture files I created, I get the following warning messages:

'employment.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be corrupted, located on a
server that is not responding, or read-only.

Excel cannot access 'employment.xls'. The document may be read-only or
encrypted.

Photo Gallery can't open the picture because you do not have permission to
access the file location.

Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
(G:\...\ResumeDetails....) This message can appear if the file has been saved
with permissions. Permissions, also known as rights or privileges can be
applied to a file, folder, or almost any resource available from a network
(printers, shares, files, databases, web sites, etc.) When a user attempts to
open a resource that requires specific user permissions, this message will
appear if the user does not have the required permissions.

I brought the computer in to Geek Squad at Best Buy where I bought the
computer. A tech tried to get into permissions for the files and could not
open the files either. He said it may be a security measure that I will run
into no matter what PC I try to open files from. He suggested that I may be
able to read the files from an Apple computer because they probably do not
have the security measures in place.

I, at some point in the past, set up a user password on the Gateway XP. I
know this password so if that is necessary, I can provide it.

That's where it stands for now. Please help.

Hi Dennis,
I tried taking ownership and still cannot open the files and I get the same
warning messages. The problem is that I cannot get past the first step in
taking ownership. The instructions indicate that I must be logged on to the
computer with an account that has administrative credentials. The computer
that I am logged on to is the Gateway Vista which I am plugging the XP hard
drive in to. I cannot figure out how to start and log on using the XP hard
drive. I am assuming that if I was able to do this, it would act like the XP
hard drive was the computer rather than the Gateway Vista, and the XP would
ask me for the user password I previously set up.

You have to have administrative rights on the vista in order to take
ownership using the vista. You are not going to be logging into xp you are
just going to be able to read the file content. But if you have an excel
document that was on your xp harddrive you will have to have excel installed
on the vista in order to read and so forth.

Im in the same situation. I got a vista computer, and attached my xp
hard drive as the secondary drive. To access the files on the xp drive,
I had to do the following while logged in as a vista administrator

What I did:
1) navigate to the top level folder (for me C:\Docouments and
Settings\mm)
2) right click the folder
3) Take Ownership
