Default Multiple mouse pointers on logon screen

Xp has been going along OK. I've not added any new
software or updates, But recently when starting up, on the
logon screen, it has become impossible to select using the
mouse - I get a couple of jumpy pointers over the screen
and they don't respond to mouse movement. I can select a
user with the keyboard arrow keys. Once onto the desktop,
the mouse pointer is fine
Any idea what I could try
