Can't reinstall fax
Hi
I had the fax installed and used it once, then sometime ago did something silly & ended up removing? OE IE and other items. I hunted around and managed to get it all reinstalled without loosing anything. Last night I tried to use the Fax again it wasn't in the printer folder and the Start progs .... Fax was empty. I tried using add and remove to reinstall. This started but it couldn't find some .dll s though they were available in uncompressed form eg .dll not just ..dl_ I tried directing the install wizard to the location of the .dll with no success it still said not found or similar. Foolishly thinking perhaps it doesn't need this, (idiot I am) I clicked on continue or similar and ended up doing the same for a lot of other files. Obviously it didn't install. Now if I run the add and remove the fax item still isn't ticked, if I try to install it the install programme runs to the point where it couldn't find the dll file then says complete. If I have the printer folder open in the background during install, the fax folder appears then dissappears. I've read the post which says about the hotfix but can't make head nor tail of it. Is there something I can delete then try reinstalling after extracting the dl_ files which I think I could do, then re run the install. Sorry its so long but hope it may give you a clue as to what I've done Regards Jeff |

Can't reinstall fax
Thank but I've seen this page. Problem because I clicked don't install or
ignore or similar box when it couldn't find trhe .dll files, when I try to reinstall it doesn't ask for them anymore. the blue line trtavells across the installer dialog box till it reaches the same point as it started to ask for the .dll files then just says complete. In any case the .dll files were their as well as the .dl_ files. When I directed them to the .dll files the can't find dialog box kept reappearing. I can only imagine the .dll were corrupt. If it doesn't ask for them any more I can't install them even if I extract from the .dl_ files. Because it doesn't ask for them any more I don't know which ones to extract, there were loads I seem to remember. Thanks anyway Jeff T "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835132 -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Jeff T" wrote in message ... Can't reinstall fax
This problem appears to occur because the security data base is corrupted as
documented he http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/ You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP You can either: 1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes listed in Knowledge Base articles. 2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB article to recover from security database corruption: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00270202 HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software Note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the Esentutl.exe utility and would prefer you try the hotfix.
