My computer with Windows 8.1 is downloading Windows 10 right now. I
had updates set to download the updates but to let me choose which ones
to install.

So while it's downloading, I checked my update settings, and sure
enough, it was still set to only check for updates, not to install

them.

I am removing Windows 8.1 from that computer, and I'm removing Windows
7 Professional from another computer, and I will only be using Linux
Mint from now on.

And who's supposed to care?

Yer mama, apparently. As an obviously deformed and mentally ill
thalidomide baby from the '60s, she didn't abort you, now did she? But
that was probably mainly because of the welfare checks and food stamps

she
would have missed out on to support her crack and heroin habits if she'd
just flushed you once and for all back then. Alas, hindsight, ehhh?

Do you just cut and past these?

YOU damn sure copy and pasted that one from mine back at yours.
("past" = Freudian Slip + knickers and geriatric diapers)

Oh, hey, hi AUK! Any of the old crowd around?

YOU are "the old crowd"... you and and your geriatric sock-poopette morons.

HTH.

How is it non-standard? Part of the problem with Linux is that there
are no standards.

Hence why it is awful across the board.

FUN FACT: Even in Cuba where it is essentially a criminal offense to use
American products, the airports, hotels and regular people use Windows
XP rather than the government-sponsored local Linux distribution. These
people would rather risk being shot in the head than run Linux. It says
a lot.

be back soon enough though; Linux is just too awful for anyone to
stick to it.

In November, it will be two years that I have been using Linux Mint
full time.

Have you ever seen me post here in the last two years using Windows?

Just out of curiousity, if you have been running Mint for two years
full time, what is this Windows 8.1 machine that you have? You make it
sound like you have just recently decided to move to linux. Inquiring
minds want to know

Last November I bought two computers, one a Dell laptop with Windows
8.1, the other an HP with Windows 7. I installed Linux Mint along side
the existing operating system on both computers, and just kept up with
the Windows updates. I had been using Linux Mint for about nine months
at that time.

I never used Windows 8.1, because just looking at it was disgusting.

I really liked Windows 7, but Microsoft is going abandon it, and sell
Windows as a service, and I can't accept that, and I won't agree to
their terms of use.

Do tell. I plan on keeping Win7 and don't see how MS abandonment will
have any impact. I might be wrong so if I am maybe you could enlighten
me. Will MS somehow prevent me from using Win7 somehow? Will they change
the EUA sometime in the future?

I know I don't need any more of their useless updates for one.

I have made restore disks for both computers, if I decided to sell
them, or give them away, because I know most people use Windows.

What I didn't know at the time, was that I could have bought that Dell
with Linux installed.

Well I'm someone and I use Linux Mint alongside Windows 7 Professional.
Surely people are free to use whatever they wish without gratuitous
insults from people like you and Old Guy. At least you aren't appending a
bunch of HTML code at the end of your post.

I have Mint on a DVD but every time I boot into Linux I find I have to
reset things like my video card configuration so I can use two monitors.
Is there a way I can update these settings to the DVD or should I simply
devote one system to Linux and install on the SSD?

Back from the weekend and this crap is still going on...

Actually Linux is not "awful across the board" and there are standards.
There is certainly a lot of choice, though, which is something people may
not be accustomed to.

Bottom line is if you are a gamer then Linux is not for you. If you need
Microsoft Office and nothing else will do, Linux is not for you. If you
have used nothing but Windows for the last 20 years and do not want to
learn to do things differently, Linux is not for you. Beyond that it's a
judgment call as to what sucks the least for your particular requirements.
For all I know, Plan 9 may be the ticket for some users.

As I've said before, I've been working in the computer industry for
over 40 years and have worked with a large number of different systems.
They *all* suck in their own way.

It says a lot about people there not wanting to trust their government.

I would not use a U.S. government-sponsored distribution for that matter.
If that was all that was available, I'd probably be using XP myself.

I sure as hell would not touch the NSA's "high security" Linux distribution
with a 10-foot pole.

I don't mind suggesting to someone

Try the LiveCD and see if you like it

However, I draw the line at gratuitous suggestions
that people should "just install Linux over Windows
right away". As then, when they don't like what happened
and they want Windows back again, they're totally unprepared
and they end up coming back here for help.

Of course, nobody is smart enough to do backups.
They don't even do backups here, before
installing Windows 10 :-( Despite all the
friendly advice.

As long as you suggest "side effect free" things
here, I don't have a problem with it. I do have
a problem with juveniles who create destructive
recipes for people who don't know any better. And
I still see people (even yesterday), planning
to test Linux by installing it first. You can
boot the LiveCD and test stuff. You can
boot a LiveCD in a Virtual Machine (VirtualBox)
and test it too. I did that just ten minutes ago.
There are many (undestructive) options.

Paul

That's good advice, but not all inclusive.
A working live linux is a good start but does not
guarantee a working full install. If you have an
nvidia card, you'll soon find out.
Then there's the issue of the linux onion of frustration.
The deeper you go the more stuff you find. At some point,
you may decide to give up and spend your time doing something
you enjoy.

A full image backup that allows you to go back is
ESSENTIAL for any newbie attempts at converting to linux.

If you have enough ram and disk space, a virtual machine
is a great place to get your feet wet with linux.
Be aware that the virtual machine presents a hardware
configuration that's both limited and fixed.
Working in a VM does not guarantee you'll be hassle free
when you install it on the bare hardware.

Even better is a second linux computer that you can learn
without impacting your existing stuff.

That's where I want to be. I think I'll have better luck than playing
with Win10 and deciding to toss it in the crapper where it belongs.

I have several extra systems I can play with rather than sacrifice a
Windows Activation procedure with a time limit attached before I have to
marry that Win 10 beast.

I know I can remove a valid install SSD and shelf it and when I decide
I can place it back in the same machine unlike Win10 when show knows
what will happen down the road.

The same with Linux. That's why I'm thinking doing an install and move on.

The thing is that the majority of Cubans are indeed convinced that their
government is doing everything that it can to make life as blissful as
possible for the people. They blame the Americans, not the Communists
for their standard of life (and they're not incorrect in doing so).
Therefore, things produced by the government are not seen as negatively
as they are here and to be honest, it's _sponsored_ by the government,
not created by them anyway (it is developed by Havana University).

I don't know if the rank-and-file Cuban people have really have the
wool pulled over their eyes to that extent. (I know that really did not
fly in Cold War era Eastern Europe where they had the saying "We pretend
to work and they pretend to play us.") XP is a likeable enough system
and I would certainly prefer it to anything either developed by or
even sponsored by some government entity. What the rationale is in
Cuba, well, you'd have to ask the users there.

Typo, that should have been "We pretend to work and they pretend to pay us."

(Quote was provided to me years ago by a musician friend who played in
a government-sponsored band in East Germany back in the day. He now
uses a Mac.)

Perhaps. Like typical users here, their definition of "awful" may well
equate to "doesn't run Microsoft Office" or "the computer didn't come
with it."

My definition of "awful" includes things like "doesn't come with source
code so I don't really know what's in there or what it's doing" and
"dealing with product activation."
