Update Defender With Other Updates Delayed
Running Windows 10 Pro 32 bit. Would like to be able to update the Windows
Defender definitions while the other updates are delayed. Would like to avoid having to download the entire definitions file to get around this. My searches have not turned up anything and I did find anything in the policies that would allow me to do this. If this is possible would like some help figuring it out. -- Bill Brought to you from Anchorage, Alaska |

Defender updates are treated like any other 3rd party updates. -- With over 600 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |

The problem with this is they want to download the entire 119 MB file to you rather than just the updates. No anti-malware product would be worth a gnat's fart if it didn't update MORE than just hash signatures. They also incorporate heuristics that must be modified over time to adapt to the ever changing behaviors of malware. I've used several anti-virus/malware programs. Yes, they have sig updates but occasionally they also have *program* updates. I have not delved into the inner workings of Defender because it has been and remains an ineffective anti-malware choice. It's likely Microsoft nor any other anti-virus/malware author is going to divulge the inner workings of their product since secrecy is often considered security. Old sigs may no longer be needed or are no longer applicable so they should be removed. All security software based on sigs, keywords (Bayesian), or other databased identifiers should have a floor function to delete antiquated indicators; i.e., to remove the chaff. Perhaps Defender doesn't have a floor function and instead the only way to flush the old useless crap out of the sig database is to replace it. Instead of getting an incremental update, you might periodically get a cumulative update. Why do you care about the size of the sig update file? What type of Internet access do you have: always-on cable, DSL, or dial-up? Are you on a metered service? At 200 Mbps (what I have), the file would take less than 5 seconds to download (actually it was so fast that I didn't have time to move the mouse cursor to a Start button on a timer app that was ready to measure the download time). At 20 Mbps, it might take 50 seconds. On dialup, of course, it would take a lot longer, like 5 hours. 119 MB is probably less than all the slack space in your file system (file allocation is by clusters, not individual bytes) along with volume slack space (unused space between the end of file system and end of the partition where the file system resides) and partition slack space (the unused portion of the drive outside of the partition), especially if you are using drives in the terabyte capacity range. I'm wondering why you care about a 119 MB file. You aren't trying to archive the sig update downloads on floppies, are you? |

Changing the user interface or method to retrieve signature updates for Defender is NOT going to change the size of the delivered file. It will still be 119 MB in size. You still get the entire definitions file. Make sure the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) is not disabled. Both BITS and wuauserv are used by the WU client. BITS can be used by any program for background downloads (to minimize impact on system responsiveness). Defender uses BITS. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/.../mt703280.aspx https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backgr...ansfer_Service To prevent any updating, including covert updates (those you see without any prompt but notice upon shutdown a message saying updates are getting applied), I use a batch file to enable BITS & wuauserv, then run the WU client, and another batch file to disable both BITS & wuauserv. With the services disabled, your above MpCmdRun program won't be able to use BITS to download the update. https://fossbytes.com/stop-disable-w...dates-command/ Under pre-10 Windows, I've only disabled the BITS and wuauserv services. The above article mentions the dosvc service for Windows 10. I'll have to check if I should add "sc.exe [start|stop} dosvc" to my batch files as that service could affect more than just Windows updates. I use the service control (sc.exe) program to manage services which has more options than does 'net [start|stop]'. I don't just want to stop the services as they'll start on the next Windows load. I don't want a per Windows session lockout on updating. Instead I want those services stopped AND DISABLED until I decide to check for updates hence why I use sc.exe to manage them. |

Now I just click the batch file short cut on the desktop and everything works. For some reason I had already disabled dosvc. Thanks for your help. Bill |
