Turning off updates in Windows 10
I recently bought a new HP Notebook with W-10. I see MS is now forcing
updates on us whether or not we want them or care to give up the HD space. I also lose the use of the NB while these unwanted updates take over. This last one tonight took over an hour to download and install. Wasted time I could have gotten work done. Please, no reasons why they're important. I shut them off on the other PCs I had with no problems. Verizon is not an unlimited service and these updates waste data I could better use elsewhere. I Googled but could not find any helpful info on shutting updates off in W-10 Home. Someone has to know how to stop this intrusion of my time and HD space. TIA |

TIA There are various knobs in the Pro version, that can delay updates or upgrades. But I don't know if those settings actually stop them forever. Now this method, is a bit different... ******* Windows isn't going to like this. The operation is implemented as a "rename", so that you won't damage the hardlink between this file and WinSXS. If there is a Windows File Protection in Windows 10, it would stop this from working. rename wuaueng.dll wuaueng.dll.bak To avoid permission issued, I did the rename in Linux Mint (LiveCD boot). Once C: is mounted in Linux (takes one click), I use "df" command to display the Disk Free table and the "name" of C: becomes apparent. The "mv" or Move command is the equivalent of "rename". https://s13.postimg.org/jxvwua6c7/pesky_wuaueng.gif Then boot Windows 10 and watch the fun. Here, those little dots for the spinning Windows Update thing, those dots keep moving all day long. Because attempts to call "wuauserv" service (wuaueng.dll service), are no longer being answered. If you just turned off wuauserv in the Services panel, USOSVC would likely turn it on again. USOSVC uses techniques like Tash Scheduler entries, to "sorta" repair stuff like a switched off wuauserv. But if you break the kneecaps of wuauserv, then USOSVC doesn't have a full troubleshooter waiting to glue it all together again. There are troubleshooter scripts, but I've never seen one that was equipped with a miniature "sfc /scannow" built-in. https://s13.postimg.org/5rg5z2y1z/wh...in_forever.gif Task Manager shows Windows Defender doing the usual scanning, but no sign of TiWorker or SVCHOST wuauserv. I did that for a few days to a Win10 install in a VM, which is not quite the same as verifying the OS running on an OEM computer. Still, you can have fun with that, and see if Microsoft has crafted a self-repairing OS yet. They actually have the technical means to automatically fix stuff like that, but do they have the balls to do it ? Time will tell. That's going to break a few things. Manually installing a .msu from catalog.update.microsoft.com is no longer going to work. WSUSOffline would no longer work. MBSA 2.3 wouldn't work (but there's no evidence it works on Windows 10 anyway). You won't get Windows Defender definitions that way. They can be downloaded as a separate EXE file (about 100MB), but when you run that, I think that will jam up too. It's possible installing regular software will still work. And it's easy to undo. rename wuaueng.dll.bak wuaueng.dll # the Windows way mv wuaueng.dll.bak wuaueng.dll # the Linux way Paul |

Someone has to know how to stop this intrusion of my time and HD space. TIA To prevent automatic download & installation of Windows Updates PERMANENTLY, including new builds such as the FCU do the following: 1) Download Windows Update MiniTool 2) Go into user interface, on the left hand side you will see 'Automatic Updates', change from 'automatically' to 'Notification mode' After doing the above, whenever there are updates, you will get a popup notification that there are updates to install. Run the MiniTool & check for updates. When the one that you don't want to install appears in the list, put a check mark beside it & click on the option to hide it. Then, if you go back and re-run Windows Update, that update will not appear again (IF, by chance, it does show up again after you have hidden it, just hide it again - sometimes this happens maybe due to a minor bug in the program). Good luck!! |

You didn't try harder or you weren't determined to find a simple solution like most nutters here!!. The simple solution is to launch your "services.msc" APP and then disable Windows Update. Look at this pictu https://i.imgur.com/dSaGEON.png https://i.imgur.com/dSaGEON.png Simple solutions are always the best but idiots like to install all sorts of gadgets and when they get viruses or malware, they blame Microsoft. It's simple to blame Microsoft because that is the only corporation known to the entire world. Nutters recommending third party gadgets don't even know who has released those gadgets nor do they know their background or their intention to release free software. However, any malware you install is always a good thing; We are here to sort out any problems you may encounter later in your computing experience!!!! /--- This email has been checked for viruses by Windows Defender software. //https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/comprehensive-security/ -- With over 600 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |
