When I remove attachments from a message, the size shown does not
drop -
even if the attachment was the bulk of the message. This seems to be
true, even if I quit and restart Outlook, emptying the bin as I do so.
In other email clients I've used, the shown size _does_ drop when I
remove attachments. So what gives?
1. Are the full emails - i. e. including the attachments - still
being
kept somewhere? If so, how do you get at them?
2. If the answer to 1. is "yes they are but you can't", what's the point
of the ability to "remove" attachments?

Exactly how are you removing the attachment?

Attachment appears as a rectangle above body of email (whether in
preview pane or opened in separate window). I right-click on it, press v
("Remove attachment" has v underlined) or click remove, press space or
click yes, and the rectangle disappears. The paperclip in the list of
emails doesn't disappear nor does the size shown for the email drop,
even if I go to another folder and back or close and restart Outlook,
though the rectangle remains gone.

I'm using Outlook 2016. There's no such rectangle here. It must be a
difference in the versions, so sorry, I can't try to see what happens here.

I'm also using Outlook 2016 and I see the rectangle he's talking about,
assuming the email has one or more attachments. There's one for each
attachment. It displays the default icon for that filetype, the name of the
attachment, and its size. The rectangles are at the top of the email body,
just below the To: line. Right clicking on that rectangle or pulling down
on the little black arrow on the right edge of each rectangle gives you the
same context menu, and Remove Attachment is one of the options.

Sorry, you're right, of course. Now I see it. It's a *icon*. He said
"rectangle," so I was looking for the wrong thing. And I get the same
result he does.

Sorry for the confusion. I tend to think of icons as square, or at least
squarish, and usually pictorial only (see Char's above "the default icon
for that filetype").

It's all on hold for the moment, as today when I turned the laptop on,
screen is all white with an abstract design - I think it's died. Have
ordered HDMI-to-VGA adapter so I can try an external monitor (I only
have VGA-type monitors), so will report back.

(I'm surprised how cheap the adapters a what's the catch? They
[https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143656266314] claim to go up to at least
1080P vertically, and seem to need no power.)

No problem. My misunderstanding is as much my fault as yours.
