Changing File Manager
When displaying a folder with video files in it, File Manager will actually
display a thumbnail of the video if it is in MP4 H.264 format. In the interest of saving space, I have been transcoding some of my video files to HVEC from H.24, for a significant savings in disk space [and a tremendous cost in CPU time, which I don't care about because for the most part my PC doesn't have a lot to do anyways]. Unfortunately, File Manager will not create and display a thumbnail for MP4 files encoded with HVEC. Is there any way I can change this behavior so File Manager will create and display thumbnails for HVEC encoded files? |

Are you sure you're running the latest version of File Manager? https://github.com/Microsoft/winfile/releases/tag/v10.0 :-P I am running whatever version that came with 1709. I have VLC as my default video player, and when I wrote this, File Manager would just display the VLC traffic cone for HEVC encoded files. I have now fixed it though. [I should have done this research first but it's late and I'm tired.] I found a reference to the still free HEVC add in for Windows 10 and installed it. Now File Manager displays a thumbnail for HEVC encoded files just like it does for H.264 one. But thanks for responding. It is appreciated. |

I go back to Windows 3.1. I think I will always think of it as File Manager, no matter what new name Microsoft comes up with. |

Microsoft is *wonderful* at changing names of things and thereby confusing millions of people. |
