Default Printer Problem

I have Windows 10 with the latest updates installed on my HP Pavilion
desktop computer. I have an HP Officejet 7000 E809a Wide Format
printer that has been working well until yesterday. Today it won't
print anything black. It prints in color very well and in grayscale,
too but it won't print anything black. I replaced the black ink
cartridge but this didn't resolve the problem.

I'm wondering if this is a problem that has its roots in the latest
Windows update. I had this recent update installed yesterday and
didn't use my printer afterward.

Does anyone here have any suggestions? Thanks. Gordon

Make sure you have the latest printer driver. Get it direct from HP. No
guarantee, but best bet for a quick fix.

HTH

Thanks, but I have already done this. The Device Manager Printers
Officejet...indicates that I have the latest driver version.

If my printer didn't print grayscale okay I would think maybe the
printhead was clogged but there must be some other problem or it
wouldn't print grayscale either. Gordon

Gordon, just a wild guess but it could be using the color carts to do
greyscale and there may still be something amiss in the black system. Is
the printhead part of the cartridge or Seperate on this Printer.

Printers generally have a self test, do that first, you may have to
consult the manual to find out how or do a web search.
I don't believe black printing needs the color, but color printing will
use black unless you have a separate black photo cartridge in which case
I'm not sure.

Interesting!!! I seem to be having a problem similar with a
Brother laser printer; it looks to be printing in gray scale
instead of black & white (the printout looks like printing on
a "dirty" piece of paper). Haven't seen any setting that does
that!

If you have a color and gray scale only problem, then it looks to
me like that it is a win 10 problem somewhere but cannot see how
m$ did the deed when using the manufacturer's driver. Could be
that win 10 is telling the driver that the file is in "color" no matter
if it is a text file. Deleting & reinstall Brother's black & white
laser printer doesn't fix the problem.

Thanks for your posting as it helps that it wasn't the user's fault.

Hi all,
Same problem here with my "old" HP laser printer ...
Printed fine (under Win 10) until the last Win 10 update.
Tried everything .. downloaded latest drivers from HP site..
driverguide
etc..
No soltion at all..
Finaly I restored my Windows 7 Image ... everything works perfect ..!!!

So its surely Microsoft that scuwes-up the printer drivers :-@ Shame
....

Greetings, Zeezicht

I was also thinking it was some problem with Windows 10, but this
doesn't fit in with the fact that the printer will not print anything
but a blank sheet when I press the printer test button on the front of
the printer. I don't think this requires any cooperation from the
computer or the OS. Gordon

Rene, I think you're right in that it uses the color cartridges to
print in grayscale. But I have no idea as to how to check this out or
how to rectify the problem if I get it figured out. I'm about ready to
toss the HP printer in the garbage barrel and go buy a new printer,
but I don't know what brand or model would be the best one to get.

I just connected this printer to my wife's computer, also running
Windows 10 with the latest updates. The printer problem remained the
same. So, I guess I can conclude that the problem is in the printer
and probably the only practical solution is to go buy a new printer. I
can't figure out any way to purge the print head for the black ink,
other than press the test print button on the front of the HP printer.
I've done this several times and it hasn't produced any changes.

I'm able to tell my printer to print black not in color in the print dialogue. Never gave it much thought if it really
did one black ink or all colors to get black, but it sure looks black in text?!

My HP printer also has this option but when I choose it the printed
material is not really black but is a dark shade of gray.

I still haven't figured out what is causing the problem with my HP
printer but I'm increasingly convinced that it is within the printer,
not the computer or Microsoft 10 OS. I guess I'll take the printer to
the store where I bought it and see if they can figure it out for me.
This may cost more than the printer is worth, though. Gordon

Erm, the correct inference is that it's a Windows 10 issue. It doesn't
play nice with the latest/current drivers. You could try rolling back to
an earlier driver. D/l it (you will likely have to go to non-HP source,
so check for malware). Then uninstall the current driver, and install
the older older one. I wouldn't bet on this fix, though.

Good luck,

I thought of doing this but I want to figure out why the print test
button on the front of the computer won't print black even when the
computer is not connected to my computer. All the print test button
does is cause the printer to act like it is printing then spew out a
clean, blank sheet of paper.

But, with the printer connected to my computer I can print an image
file and it looks very good color wise but the black stuff is just a
dark gray. A Christmas tree with lots of bright colored decorations
looks very good but the text that Santa Claus says is just gray. Maybe
he had too much Vodka last night and his speech is a bit blurred???

If it is an HP printer the print head is part of the cartridge. Can you

Gordon did try that Kieth, stated in his first post.
I think Gordon is correct and that the printer black circuit system has
gone south.
Just for info my son just bought a new HP Inkjet printer at Staples for
$39.95 CDN, and A Brother Monochrome Laser printer for $89.95 CDN so
that may be the way to go.

I did install a fresh, new black cartridge but this didn't produce any
change in the problem. It must be the (whatever) that the ink
cartridge snaps into. The cartridge just supplies the ink as needed
but thee other part does the transfer of ink to the print paper. That
seems to be blocked in some way. I was hoping I could find some form
of print head cleaner that would dissolve and wash away any clotted,
dried ink in this region but have not located anything of this nature
in any of the local computer stores. Gordon
