System restore always fails
In XP home, I have system restore points from most days, but, every
time I try to go back to one, it goes through the whole process then says it can't restore to that point. I have already cleared out the points one in case of corruption I have tried many times to restore from Safe Mode, where, as far as I know, my antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware etc are not working and maybe interfering. Any ideas? |

Reinstallation from your original CD or partition should take less than one hour. You would then need to update appropriately, but might this not be the fastest solution in the long run? -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Any ideas? One method that has worked for me when other ways have failed is running SR from Safe Mode with Command Prompt. On boot up, press F8 for the Windows menu and select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Once it's up, type in %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press Enter. Once the GUI comes up, pick the date you want to restore and follow the prompts. The one con with this method is that you cannot undo the restoration, but if it won't restore otherwise, I'd say it's a small price to pay. -- SC Tom -There's no such thing as TMI when asking for tech support. |

There is no option to undo it from SM w/ Command Prompt, and I don't think it is an available option within Windows afterwards. IIRC, it states that after you pick a date, but before you start the restore. -- SC Tom -There's no such thing as TMI when asking for tech support. |

Since I hadn't had my PC on but for about 30 minutes today, I decided to give it a try and see if there was an undo option. After booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt, I started system restore. The verbiage in the left hand column is the same as the GUI within Windows, but the "Create a restore point" option is not there. I went ahead and restored to a point late in the day yesterday and let it run. After it was through and Windows started back up, the confirmation message showed, saying that the restoration was successful. I then opened System Restore within Windows, and the option to "Undo my last restoration" was not there. |

Thanks for the reply.
Have now tried almost everything on the link you gave me with no success. Uninstalled Zonealarm and ran safe mode with no programmes running and still fails. System restore always fails
Seems to have been due to the parts of Norton Systemworks 2006 that I
still had on the computer. Uninstalled it after a long struggle with extensive cleaning afterwards to get all the bits left behind and System Restore works now |

usable, then suggest you try configuring the system to Clean boot, reinstall System Restore, undo the Clean boot steps, and then restart to normal Windows mode - How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353/ How to reinstall System Restore in Windows XP http://bertk.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html MowGreen ================ *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten ================ "Security updates should *never* have *non-security content* prechecked Tom Barkas wrote: Thanks for the reply.
