First, you probably don't want to block followups, that allows a
known troll to "poison" a thread, suppose someone asks a question
about Win7 and receives several answers. So far, so good. Next, a
Linux Troll posts his/her/it's usual crap and you set the score to
-9999 for Joe Troll but followups need to be set to less than -9999
(I use -5000) so now the follow ups are downloaded (I download
headers only) and marked so you can read them or not but you
recognize them a followups to a troll.

Example, here's my scoring for Google Groupers:
================================================= Sco -9999
Message-ID: googlegroups\.com

Sco -5000 References: googlegroups
=================================================

Simple, easy and effective. It allows me to see replies to Google
Group Spammers and read (if I want) in the rare case a Google Grouper
has posted something other than spam.

Xnews also has the convenient "Get Parent" and "Reconstruct Thread"
features so I can go back and get the original GG post if needed.

Thank you. That may be true, but I would still like to know how to mark
followups to Joe Troll. Nothing in References or Message-ID will point
specifically to a particular poster.

An example of what I would like to block is the thread immediately
preceding this one (" alias says..."). I have both Alias and Frank in
my block list, but I'm still left with their responders.

You can ask any questions about Xnews and scoring in
news.software.readers, many very sharp people are there. Also, the
late (and much missed) Blinky the Shark left us with his own Xnews
site:

http://twovoyagers.com/blinkynet.net...x_windows.html

Scroll down to the Xnews section and note the links to many other
Xnews information sites.

I don't see any threads starting out " alias says...."

I see one thread entitled "alias says.......".

The whole point is, Panzke aside, which seems to pepper this
group with post after post, how hard can it be to *not* read
troll posts ?

Do you have no self control ?

As you can see, you end up with a bunch of orphaned posts all
starting with

If you didn't KF, there's be ONE thread entitled....

"alias says he can walk to the beach from Madrid, in 20
mins...Oh the distance is about 190 miles"

It's painfully obvious that is OT.

Not if you have a newsreader that can ignore the subthread started by the
troll.

The headers show he's using Agent. Xnews will do so also.

That I gathered, but I thought making the response to an honest question
into a mystery was rude. Since this is the only group I use where trolls
are a problem, I would rather not have to pay for a newsreader.

Xnews will do so also.

In which case I repeat my question. How do I do that with XNews?

You can kill the thread. First, open xnews.ini and copy and past this
line, I put it in right before the "Compose" section but I'm not sure
it matters:

[Popups]
ArticleList=acaAddToScore,acvRevealThread,acaReCon sThread,-,acaMarkAllRead,acaMarkAllUnread

Make sure under "Special" you have "Enable Scoring" and "Hard Kill"
selected, close and restart Xnews.

Now, when you see a troll's thread, just right click, select "Add
to score file", from the popup check "Kill", set expiration to
whatever you want, push the "Subject" button and be sure "Matches"
is selected, click the "Rescore on Apply" box and click "Apply".
You should now see the entire thread marked -9999 and if you restart
Xnews, the entire thread will be gone.

Follow up is set to news.software.readers, OK?
