Default quotation marks trouble

And MS seems to have provided yet another problem... or I suppose they call
it a feature.
When I press the " character, I want to get a " character and no messing
about! After pressing once I get nothing and after a second attempt I get
two quotation marks! How can I get rid of this annoyance? I just want to get
straigt forward the character I pressed WYSIWYG!

thanks :-)

It's right there in your header, it's because you're using
Microsoft Windows Mail.

That happens here too with several foreign keyboard layouts. But when I
switch to an English one it works ok.

Not enough info.

What program?

When did it start?

What were you doing when it started?

What have you done so far to fix it?

etc. etc. etc.

Please be precise.

An invalid supposition. You don't know what is causing this problem and
why you came here to ask about it. Condemnation without evidence makes
you look foolish.

When I press the " character, I want to get a " character and no messing
about! After pressing once I get nothing and after a second attempt I get
two quotation marks! How can I get rid of this annoyance? I just want to get

When looking at the Windows desktop, pressing " will do nothing. So it
is in some unidentified application where you are hitting " and nothing
happens on the first keypress. So what's the secret application where
you're tapping on the " key? Once you identify the app, make sure it
doesn't have " defined in its auto-correct feature, if it has that
feature.

Ed already mentioned using the wrong keyboard layout on your hardware
that doesn't match up with the regional language setting in Windows.
Use Start - Run to execute "control.exe intl.cpl" (sans quotes). Click
on the "Change keyboards" button. What is your default language? What
are the selected keyboard layouts (services)? Do you have a keyboard
that also conforms to that language layout?

You never identified what hardware you have, like desktop, laptop,
notebook, etc, like brand and model. Could be you bought a pre-built
computer and it came with lots of bloatware some of which controls or
intercept keyboard input and it is configured or corrupts the keystrokes
that are input through it. Remember that we cannot look over your
shoulder to see what you are using and at what you are pointing. Don't
expect anyone to go searching on your prior Usenet posts to find what
hardware you mentioned there which may not be the same as you're using
that exhibits this problem (plus Google destroyed searching their Usenet
archive and very few Usenetizens operate their own leeching NNTP server
to archive the Usenet).

You could try rebooting Windows into its safe mode and retest. Maybe a
startup program is causing the problem, like some keyboard macro tool.

It's not just quote marks. Almost everything that's wrong with the world
today is caused by MS, as I imagine you'll agree.

FYI: This is just my sardonic way of agreeing with VanguardLH.

No, notepad idem dito.

Either you have a German keyboard, or your Windows has been configured to
use English-International keyboard layout. On latter case, switch it to
English (United States) via Control Panel.

That sounds like the most plausible lead so far.

The original poster should try that first.

You're right, this setting was "United States international". Changed it to
"United States" and the "pain" is gone. :-)

Thanks,

My crystal ball is out for repairs, so I won't attempt to guess what
program you're using, or the context in which this is occurring.
"MS" (Microsoft, presumably) is really not sufficient information.
