Default Update from Win7 home prem SP1 to Win8 pro hang on first restart

Hello,

I bought an official update DVD to upgrade my Win7 home Prem 64b SP1
desktop system to Win8 pro 64bits.

The evaluation test gives few minor warning nothing prohiting update
process.

I started the standard upgrade process and after an hour the system
entered a first restart process and the system hang with a small blue
windows. Same when rebooting and choosing to pursue upgrade process.

Does somebody has an idea ???

Thanks in advance

Perform a fresh install rather than an upgrade.

If your data is not backed up be sure NOT to format your drive,
your old installation will be in windows.old

If you can still boot to your old installation back up your data from there.

Thanks for feedback ... I bought an Upgrade DVD so you can't do a fresh
install ( DVD not bootable), you can only perform an upgrade/update
running under Win7.
So, ???

You can install the Upgrade disc as a Clean install, by using the
Double Install method. The key step is Step 5, using "Refresh Your PC"
as a means to do the second install. "Refresh Your PC", installs files
again, and counts as the second installation, with the files of the
first installation counting as the "existing OS".

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...8-upgrade.html

The other method they mention, using the .bat file, uses "slmgr /rearm"
and that didn't work for me. But doing it via Step 5, worked. Your
mileage may vary.

Philo, I would think two things, why would anyone even think of doing this
type of upgrade without first doing an image backup of the system and file
backup of any other data partition. The second point would be same as the
first with the deletion of anything following the first 'this'.

If it's not to late - - - And you can still get back to your Win7
configuration, be sure to do a Disk Image of the original Win7. Having
recently completed the process from Win 7 to Win8, and now back to the
original Win7, your life will be significantly simplified by having he
option to go back to the original. I gave Win8 about 5 months of trying
it out before throwing in the towel.

Thanks to all of you for your input...
In fact I'm stuck just at the first restart in Win8 install/upgrade
process which means Win8 installation is between step 2 and 3, so I
can't do any any refresh Win8 install !!! ...

Can you go back to Win 7 somehow?
Either by hitting F8 during boot-up and see if there are any available options
or as a last resort doing an OEM factory recovery via the BIOS.

Windows 8 really wrinkles my fur! It's a pig of an operating system. I'd
just sit on the the dvd and practice farting through the hole in the
middle (of the cd not your arse).

Yes, at boot time I've 3 possibilities: Win7, Win8, Pursue Install Win8
prog/upg

If I select Win7 , it launches Win 7 and works OK.

If I select Pursue Install Win8 or Win8 it hangs with small blue windows
on black screen.

Castor, one of the problems I had with Win8 was restart. It would
always hang up. Try this. When it hangs up hit the power button to go
to a shut down. Maybe upon hitting the power button again it might
continue onto the power up sequence. (Actually you probably have
already done that just to keep going)

Any reason you wanted/needed to install Win8??

I didn't notice any problems - you're probably doing much better than
you think :-)

I have two ideas about Window 8, but I don't remember reading whether
you already knew them or tried them.

1. Can you start the installation from the very beginning? You *should*
be able to boot from the Windows 8 DVD and restart the installation.

2. When installing Windows (8 and older versions too), when Windows gets
part way through the boot process and restarts, it is important *not* to
boot from the DVD.
