Windows 8.1.1 update
Hi, Paul.
Why go through all those steps? I just use the same key-combo I've been using since at least WinXP: Win+Pause/Break The System Info screen pops up in my face and there, right in the middle, is a line that says: System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor Since my computer is an ordinary desktop machine (home-built), the next line says: Pen and Touch: No Pen or Touch Input is available for this Display Some modern keyboards try hard (it seems) to HIDE the Pause/Break key, and I've spent several minutes looking for one in the store, but it's almost certain to be there. Actually, it's the Break function that I'm looking for - the ancient CtrlC (or 03h) code from DOS days or even before. But most modern keyboards either label the key "Pause/Break" or (like mine) put one of the labels on it and we have to press the Function key to toggle the other use - and if you don't realize that, you can press "Pause" all day and never get the "Break" result. But it STILL doesn't show 8.1.1 or 8.1 Update or any other such indication. Just 8.1. :{ Ver in the Command Prompt window shows Version 6.3.9600. WinKey followed by Ver makes you go a few more steps before confirming 64-bit and 8.1 Pro with Media Center. :( RC -- R. C. I finally got it straighten out. I downloaded the 64 bit package and
installed it. It said it was already installed. And the Ver is 6.3.9600. And it so happens I got 12 updates today. But it was the first updates I've gotten since 6/13. One thing I don't have though is a search button at logon. I don't think I'll really miss one though. Thanks to everyone in the group for their response, suggestion and help Walt. |

Windows 8.1.1 update
Hi, RC
Yes, the edition in System only changes from 8.0 to 8.1 and retains whatever flavor (e.g. Pro or Pro with Media Center) existed prior to the update. Which, possibly in MSFT terms, means 8.1 or the mandatory 8.1 update are not Service Packs. Separately, I don't recall if there ever was final clarification on the ability to reuse that free Media Center product key (supposedly activation required prior to Jan. 31 2013) if one had to reinstall 8.0. Nor the later possibility - clean install 8.1 then use that free or even a post Jan. 31 2013 Windows 8.0 era purchased Media Center key after a clean install using 8.1 full version media. -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps R.
