Any Private Internet Access (PIA) user here?
I am at my wit's end in trying to figure out how to make it work on my
Win 8.1 system. I've been googling for solution but I could not find anything that worked for me. The vendor's web site isn't much help, either. Maybe one of you figured it all out and could help. Thanks. |

It would say that it was connected but my IP would stay the same..since I had only invested something like $6.95 I decided to use private tunnel through open vpn..it works well but You pay for the amount of data You use not a monthly fee |

I had one issue where I had to disconnect the VPN to let outgoing e-mail leave but that was corrected by one contact to their tech support who gave me one of their server IP addresses for the SMTP server. Now e-mail works fine with or without the VPN enabled. Great service to avoid ISP throttling of Netflix, etc. if that is occurring. |

It has worked fine here on my Windows 8.1. I temporarily canceled it, but the icon is still in the system tray. I agree with the advice about the installer. |

Did you download the PIA installer_win.exe? Pretty simple to set up, just need to enter the password and username, select a server from the green PIA icon in your tray. The server list pops up when you right click the icon. Here is a link to the PIA installer exe: https://www.privateinternetaccess.co..._installer_win I like that you can pay with a gift card. You can buy those with fairly anonymous cash so adding extra face-in-the-crowd to the mix. That's a good touch. I just wish there was a way to physically deposit cash straight into their bank account, linking it to your VPN account with a passcode. That would also be cool, I think. J. I just installed their program on a Windows 8.1-64bit system as a test. Past usage had been on a W7 machine with no problems of any kind. Presently I am running Windows 8.1-64 on a VMWare Player Virtual Machine and the VPN tunnel I specify comes up just fine. Freaked me out a bit when using a Hong Kong tunnel and the Google search screens started returning everything in Chinese. A few changes in the Google configuration and I was back to English responses. I did find that I needed to run CCleaner to flush the caches and cookies as many sites were using the old data to identify where I was located at. Yes you can flush them in other ways but I use CCleaner for it's simplicity. Once I finished pulling the handle on the flushing the DNS cache and cookies the rest of the web sites once were reporting they thought I was located at the end of the active tunnel. Even Microsoft updates decided I could use the Euro update giving me what looks like the option to remove Internet Explorer while visiting a UK tunnel. Not sure if I am ready to try that on this machine but it looked interesting. |

This time I downloaded it to my Windows 7 laptop though, to have a clean install. The installation was indeed easier this time, especially after I set my router to forwarding port 1723 to my Win7 laptop's IP. I connect to the nearby Seattle PIA server and the green PIA icon indicates that I am connected. However, I have no way to verify if that is indeed the case, especially because the Network and Sharing Center page shows an Unidentified network (as a Public network) with no Internet access. I think it should show the Seattle connection there, shouldn't it? In the meantime I can still use Internet with my Home network. One more thing: the PIA setup allows either TCP or UDP connection. Which one should be used? |

I've been googling for solution but I could not find anything that worked for me. The vendor's web site isn't much help, either. Maybe one of you figured it all out and could help. Thanks. Did you download the PIA installer_win.exe? Pretty simple to set up, just need to enter the password and username, select a server from the green PIA icon in your tray. The server list pops up when you right click the icon. Here is a link to the PIA installer exe: https://www.privateinternetaccess.co..._installer_win Thanks for that link which I did not notice before. Which one should be used? Mine is set to UDP. To test your IP change go to http://www.whatismyip.com/. Test with PIA off, take note of your IP, next change to one of the PIA servers and test again, whatismyip.com should show your new IP. You may have to reload the whatismyip.com page between tests. I also use the Seattle server since I live in Vancouver. Be aware that your internet speeds will be fast or slow depending on the server you are connected to and also time of day makes a big difference. I often change to Toronto if my Seattle server is slow. Test your speed at http://www.speedtest.net/. This will give you a ballpark figure only, not completely accurate, but you can easily tell which servers are fast and which ones are slow. You will take a speed hit using any VPN but PIA is the fastest one IMO. My top download speeds are about 12Mbps (evening) with the VPN. I just tested my speed and it is 9 Mbps connected to Seattle and only 4Mbps using Toronto, so it will vary. With the VPN off I am getting 17 Mbps. I usually just stay on Seattle unless I notice a speed drop but at 9Mbps my internet is still fast and smooth enough that I don't notice the difference much, if at all. Torrents download at the same speed with the VPN on or off. Binary downloads from Usenet are also normal speed. Web browsing is fast as usual. If I feel my speed slowing I try different servers but Seattle is pretty good most of the time. You will get a feel for it after a while, I rarely check my speeds anymore unless things get slow, which is not often. YMMV, of course. Tip: Don't log into Gmail via a browser when connected to a VPN or you may have to change your Gmail password. Gmail does not work well with a VPN so I usually disconnect my VPN when I check Gmail. HTH Funny what you wrote in that last paragraph, as I just got an email from Google Support with the following text: ------------------------ Someone recently used your password to try to sign in to your Google Account . This person was using an application such as an email client or mobile device. We prevented the sign-in attempt in case this was a hijacker trying to access your account. Please review the details of the sign-in attempt: Tuesday, September 16, 2014 5:09:48 PM UTC IP Address: 173.192.176.131 (173.192.176.131-static.reverse.softlayer.com) Location: United States If you do not recognize this sign-in attempt, someone else might be trying to access your account. You should sign in to your account and reset your password immediately. Reset password If this was you, and you are having trouble accessing your account, complete the troubleshooting steps listed at http://support.google.com/mail?p=client_login ----------------------------- Is this what you are referring to? Though I did not log into my Gmail account (which is NOT my primary Gmail acct) with the web browser, just via my mail client. I have not changed my password yet as I figured my experimenting with the VPN might have something to do with it. Thanks for tellig me about. I'll try that http://www.whatismyip.com/ thing as soon as I have some more time. |

OK, I uninstalled PIA from my Win7 notebook and went back to install it
again on my Win8 laptop, mainly because I don't have Gmail installed there in my mail client. The installation seemed to work as the www.whatismyip.com gave me different (a fake California) IP address when PIA was connected from the real Seattle area IP address. The tray PIA manager icon is pretty handy for handling the connect/disconnect operation. What I still don't understand is why the VPN connection does not show up in the Network and Sharing Center page the way it shows up when one uses Windows' own VPN setup, the way the following link describes it. That's how I tried to set up PIA before I read your message here, but that did not work for me when it prompted me for my User Id and password. It kept refusing it, but maybe at that point I was supposed to enter my Windows Id, not my registered PIA ID. I don't know and I don't want to try it again. Anyway, here are the steps of the method that failed me: https://www.privateinternetaccess.co...t-on-windows-8 |
