Can connect to Internet but cannot see shared computers
I have a Vista Ultimate desktop connected to Netgear router through a wire
and a laptop running XP Tablet Edition connected wirelessl to the same router. Internet works fine on both machines but I cannot seem to use file sharing. On Vista, I can only see the laptop when I go to Network and Sharing Center - View full map, and even then I cannot open it. On the laptop (XP) I cannot see the network at all, neither by opening Workgroup computers, nor by entering the network path to the share. I have already checked the following: - Firewalls on both machines are turned off - Same workgroup name - Same user account name - Turned off Simple File Sharing - Shared appropriate folders At the same time, both machines show that I am connected to the network. Please help, this makes no sense to me! |

All the best, Hi again, I just spotted this: For Windows Vista 1. On the desktop, right-click Network, and then click Properties. 2. Under Tasks, click Manage network connections. 3. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties 4. In the This connection uses the following items list, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), click Advanced, and then click the WINS tab. You should see the netbios settings there... Turn it ON, and you should be set. All the best, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS." |

Can connect to Internet but cannot see shared computers
Thank you for the quick reply.
Yes, I enabled NetBios on both machines and even disabled TCP/IPv6 on Vista. I can only ping from XP to Vista and only by IP... is this useful info? Can connect to Internet but cannot see shared computers
I'm pinging by IP. When I ping by name I get "Ping request could not find
host". My DNS is set to automatic. When I look in ipconfig, DNS is 192.168.1.1 which is my router IP. "Kenneth" wrote: On Fri, 7 Nov 2008 18:59:00 -0800, Art wrote: Just noticed one more thing...
