No, I am saying those that are just starting with Windows 8 is late to the party. I wish I had been "late". Then I could have spent my money on a Windows 8.1 update whatever machine. But if you bought it at the introductory price, you only paid $39.95 for it. And 4GB of service packs/updates later, strangely it's still only worth $39.95. Maybe after 8.1 U2 shows up (soon), it'll be worth $40.00. I don't know what they charge for it today, but whatever it is, it's too much. (I just checked Newegg, and it's either $120 or $200.) When the introductory offer appears, you can always buy a copy and wait two years for the dust to settle. "We will sell no wine before its time." I said "machine", Paul. I paid almost $600 a year ago for an HP laptop. Windows 8 has a great recovery tool but that will no longer work if I need it. If I ever have to use the recovery partition...well I don't have to tell you. |

If I ever have to use the recovery partition...well I don't have to tell you. Yes, they certainly botched all that stuff. the best way to repair that, might be to find an MSDN subscription DVD, available via torrent. MSDN makes checksums available, so you can verify it hasn't been altered. (You would need a subscription to download stuff here, but the checksum can help you find other sources.) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs...x=1 &FileId=0 Windows 8.1 (multiple editions) (x64) - DVD (English) File Name: en_windows_8_1_x64_dvd_2707217.iso Languages: English SHA1: BC2F7FF5C91C9F0F8676E39E703085C65072139B http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs...x#FileId=54341 Once you search on that checksum, you'll find other references on the topic. http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/com...out_currently/ With those, you can modify ei.cfg and PID files, to make the DVD prompt you at install time, for what version you want to install. (The disc might even do that by default, but the ei.cfg trick is there anyway.) The multiple editions consist of more than one image on the DVD, so there's an image for each supported version. Since that DVD would use ..wim files, it would be a better precursor for fixing some of the botched features. I didn't use that DVD, and used my downloaded DVD that has a .esd instead of a .wim, and it isn't a good precursor for anything except the basic repair install to bump me to 8.1. Maybe if you wanted to prepare a reset image, you could use that DVD as a source. Paul |

In the foreseeable future XP everywhere will approach the low single digits and eventually disappear. Sounds like wishful thinking to me. You can't kill a legend that fast, no matter how often you click your ruby slippers together. We already know you will be a part of the low single digits. I just got rid of the last XP I have and Win8 is being installed on the HD as I type. You just started running Windows 8? What makes you think that? I most certainly didn't say so. Because you just said you just rid of XP and Windows 8 is being installed on the hard drive as you type. You're not the only one with more than one computer. I have been running 8 for two years Are you bragging? No, I am saying those that are just starting with Windows 8 is late to the party. Yep, bragging. now. And your people are very different than my people. As mine says: How Long Will Windows XP Be Secure For? Unless there's a massive vulnerability that security software can't protect against, Windows XP should still have a long life in front of it. As long as security software, drivers and other applications have Windows XP updates for them, the operating system can continue to be used securely and reliably. At some point you'll find that new hardware and software won't support the OS, and updates stop coming, but until that day you don't need to upgrade. Keep telling yourself thta. I said Vista was going to be a flop back in 2006 when everybody else was praising it. More bragging and, sport, you weren't the only one who thought Vista was a flop. Unlike you, I had the good sense not to spend my money on it. Then a year later after it was released, people finally understood what I was taking about. People understood that without your input. -- Blue |

Look before you leap, clicking those shoes won't bring XP back let alone Kansas. Fyi...those slippers were only ruby for the movie so they'd show up in the Technicolor film process. Just watched the first two hours of the Developers Keynote video. And it looks like my Windows 8 machines will be obsolete long before my XP machines will be. :-( -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Thunderbird v24.4.0 Centrino Core2 Duo T7400 2.16 GHz - 4GB - Windows 8 Pro w/Media Center |

That said, I also have five--three desktops, although one isn't in use, a laptop, and a tablet). There may be a sixth--a very old laptop that I haven't used or even looked at in several years--in a closet somewhere. |
