icon saver problem
At the suggestion of one or more posts here, I've been using ICU to save
the positions of my desktop icons: http://funk.eu/icu-icon-configuration-utility/ However, it has been screwing everything up so badly that I need to replace it. When I do a Restore to a particular date where I know everything was OK, a bunch of icons disappear. They're still listed as being on the desktop in Explorer, but they're not. If I try to create new desktop shortcuts of the affected files or folders from Explorer, I get told they already exist. Today I lost six icons. So...here were the other suggestions from when I last asked: Fences http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/ DesktopOK 4.05 http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/DesktopOK Iconoid http://www.sillysot.com/ Any thoughts on which is likely to be the most reliable? I think someone suggested last time that more than one could be used. Is that the case for all three of these (as far as anyone knows)? -- Thank you, Jo-Anne |

I use the Desktop Item Position Saver (DIPS64) from http://amip.tools-for.net/files/dips64/. There does not seem to be a DIPS86 or DIPS32. Actually, I use both DIPS64 and ICU to save my desktop arrangement. If I need to restore, I first try ICU. If that does not give me my old arrangement, then I try DIPS64. The problem is that I never saw one of these tools work perfectly. -- David E. Fences is a more sophisticated solution, I think - more than just saving icon positions. I haven't tried it. I've used the other two with no problem. Iconoid is simple and seems to work well. DesktopOK worked on my work machine on which I couldn't use Iconoid - I can't remember whether because it just didn't work, or I didn't have permission. It works well too, though it's worth saving the file (it creates, or can, real files, of type .dok) somewhere other than the default (I saved mine to my network drive), in case the default save (which IIRR isn't a file) is lost. I'd say use Iconoid if it works for you - it's somewhat simpler to use (though only slightly). I see no reason why you can't use both Iconoid and DesktopOK, though I can't really see any reason to do so. -- J. P. Gilliver. If so, moving them to where you can see them becomes another problem. I mentioned earlier, David, that they do appear in Explorer. They could well be hanging off the edge somewhere. ICU mixed them up and threw a bunch to the top left. I was able to pull them back from there--slowly, since some of them seemed to be off-screen--but if there are more out there, I can't see where they've gone. Your mention of moving them to where I can see them has set up a train of thought. Maybe later today I'll try sorting by name to see if I can pick them all up again that way. Even if I have to rearrange them afterwords, it would be worth it to have them all. -- Thank you, Jo-Anne |

So you can Ctrl-click on some individual items, Ctrl-click plus Shift-click to grab a range, then continue down the list to select additional individual files and/or additional ranges. You can even switch to keyboard input at any point, holding down Shift while using the arrow keys to move up or down. 5. If there are a large number of items and you want to select most of them, select the items that you don't want, then use the Invert Selection menu item. Doesn't work. Here's what I did: I went into Desktop in Windows Explorer. I used CTRL-A to choose all the files, and it highlighted them. The first time I did this, I used CTRL-C to copy all the files. I had created a folder under OS(C. I went to that folder and used CTRL-V to paste. Absolutely nothing happened. I got no files in the new folder. I then went back to Desktop in Windows Explorer. This time, when I had highlighted all the files with CTRL-A, I right-clicked and chose COPY. I then went to the new folder and used CTRL-V to paste. At this point, I got "Preparing to copy." It went on a while and then disappeared. Nothing was pasted. I'm wondering if there's something special about Desktop that doesn't allow this kind of command. I can copy one file and paste it into the new folder, but I can't paste multiple files, not even just two of them. Do give it a try specifically with Desktop and let me know if it works for you. -- Jo-Anne |
