Default icon saver problem

At the suggestion of one or more posts here, I've been using ICU to save
the positions of my desktop icons:

http://funk.eu/icu-icon-configuration-utility/

However, it has been screwing everything up so badly that I need to
replace it. When I do a Restore to a particular date where I know
everything was OK, a bunch of icons disappear. They're still listed as
being on the desktop in Explorer, but they're not. If I try to create
new desktop shortcuts of the affected files or folders from Explorer, I
get told they already exist. Today I lost six icons. So...here were the
other suggestions from when I last asked:

Fences
http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

DesktopOK 4.05
http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/DesktopOK

Iconoid
http://www.sillysot.com/

Any thoughts on which is likely to be the most reliable? I think someone
suggested last time that more than one could be used. Is that the case
for all three of these (as far as anyone knows)?

I use the Desktop Item Position Saver (DIPS64) from
http://amip.tools-for.net/files/dips64/. There does not seem to be a
DIPS86 or DIPS32.

Actually, I use both DIPS64 and ICU to save my desktop arrangement. If
I need to restore, I first try ICU. If that does not give me my old
arrangement, then I try DIPS64.

The problem is that I never saw one of these tools work perfectly.

Thank you, David. I used a different one on my XP machine, and it was
fine--but it's not available for Windows 7. ICU just doesn't seem to
work for me.

That sounds to me as if they're either there but outside the visible

Fences is a more sophisticated solution, I think - more than just saving
icon positions. I haven't tried it.

I've used the other two with no problem. Iconoid is simple and seems to
work well. DesktopOK worked on my work machine on which I couldn't use
Iconoid - I can't remember whether because it just didn't work, or I
didn't have permission. It works well too, though it's worth saving the
file (it creates, or can, real files, of type .dok) somewhere other than
the default (I saved mine to my network drive), in case the default save
(which IIRR isn't a file) is lost. I'd say use Iconoid if it works for
you - it's somewhat simpler to use (though only slightly). I see no
reason why you can't use both Iconoid and DesktopOK, though I can't
really see any reason to do so.

something like this happens again, a backup with a different program
might help.)

Have you tried looking at your desktop via Windows Explorer?
Occasionally, I have had desktop icons move off the edge of my monitor
screen; other times, an icon got covered by another one. They were
still there but not where I could see them.

If you open a Windows Explorer window and navigate to your desktop, you
might still find your missing icons. If so, moving them to where you
can see them becomes another problem.

I mentioned earlier, David, that they do appear in Explorer. They could
well be hanging off the edge somewhere. ICU mixed them up and threw a
bunch to the top left. I was able to pull them back from there--slowly,
since some of them seemed to be off-screen--but if there are more out
there, I can't see where they've gone.

Your mention of moving them to where I can see them has set up a train
of thought. Maybe later today I'll try sorting by name to see if I can
pick them all up again that way. Even if I have to rearrange them
afterwords, it would be worth it to have them all.

I had that happen a couple of times with XP. My solution was to gather them

Thank you, dadiOH! I was able to do that--more or less. I couldn't move
them all at once or even more than one at a time (nothing happened when
I tried), so I did just the ones that were missing from the desktop, one
by one, and they're all back now. This isn't a method I'd like to use in
the future, since it means checking all the desktop icons against all
the desktop files in Explorer, but it worked.

Now I'm curious why I couldn't move (cut and paste, since move isn't an
option with right-click) more than one at a time...

To move multiple items from a folder with Windows Explorer...

1. To move all: click on the right pane to activate it. Use Ctrl + A to
select all. Move them (or copy or cut or delete, whatever you are wanting to
do)

2. To move less than all random files and/or folders within a folder: click
on right pane to activate it. Select a file/folder you want, hold down Ctrl
and click on how many others you want, one at a time.

3. To select a contiguous range (i.e., a group - files or folders - within a
folder, do the same as # 2 but select the first or last file/folder, hold
down Shift and select the other file or folder.

I did all that. The problem was that when I tried to paste the files
into the new folder, nothing happened. The only way I was able to get it
to work was to do one file at a time. It's very weird. I do cut/paste
and copy/paste of multiple (and all) files regularly without a problem.
Maybe there's something special about the Desktop in Windows 7.

as being on the desktop in Explorer, but they're not. If I try to
create new desktop shortcuts of the affected files or folders from
Explorer, I get told they already exist.

I had that happen a couple of times with XP. My solution was to
gather them up with Explorer, move them out of the desktop folder,
then move them back. They then appeared on the GUI desktop.

Thank you, dadiOH! I was able to do that--more or less. I couldn't
move them all at once or even more than one at a time (nothing happened
when I tried), so I did just the ones that were missing from the desktop,
one by one, and they're all back now. This isn't a method I'd like to use
in the future, since it means checking all the desktop icons against all
the desktop files in Explorer, but it worked.

Now I'm curious why I couldn't move (cut and paste, since move isn't
an option with right-click) more than one at a time...

Just to add a few entries to the list, I offer these items:

4. Combo of #2 and #3: Ctrl-Select and Shift-Select can be used alone or in
conjunction with each other, 0 or more times each. So you can Ctrl-click on
some individual items, Ctrl-click plus Shift-click to grab a range, then
continue down the list to select additional individual files and/or
additional ranges. You can even switch to keyboard input at any point,
holding down Shift while using the arrow keys to move up or down.

5. If there are a large number of items and you want to select most of them,
select the items that you don't want, then use the Invert Selection menu
item.

At the suggestion of one or more posts here, I've been using ICU to
save the positions of my desktop icons:

However, it has been screwing everything up so badly that I need to
replace it. When I do a Restore to a particular date where I know
everything was OK, a bunch of icons disappear. They're still listed
as being on the desktop in Explorer, but they're not. If I try to

Doesn't work. Here's what I did: I went into Desktop in Windows
Explorer. I used CTRL-A to choose all the files, and it highlighted
them. The first time I did this, I used CTRL-C to copy all the files. I
had created a folder under OS(C. I went to that folder and used CTRL-V
to paste. Absolutely nothing happened. I got no files in the new folder.

I then went back to Desktop in Windows Explorer. This time, when I had
highlighted all the files with CTRL-A, I right-clicked and chose COPY. I
then went to the new folder and used CTRL-V to paste. At this point, I
got "Preparing to copy." It went on a while and then disappeared.
Nothing was pasted.

I'm wondering if there's something special about Desktop that doesn't
allow this kind of command. I can copy one file and paste it into the
new folder, but I can't paste multiple files, not even just two of them.
Do give it a try specifically with Desktop and let me know if it works
for you.
