That can be useful, if you want to extract a group of pictures from different folders/folder trees (or from anywhere in that awful mess that's labelled "Pictures" in Windows). You're talking about what Lightroom does and you don't know anything about it. Searching for a photo in Lr has nothing to do with your beloved "trees." A search uses file names, keywords (they're big), dates, location, ratings, and other codes that you have applied. It can locate a photo from a 100,000 file collection in an instant. Oh fergawdssake, I know LR uses pointers. The effect is to extract the photo from wherever it's located. Or maybe I should have said "located", to make allowance for your limited ability to interpret intentions Sure, LR can do all that, but only if you've taken the trouble to do all that prep work of creating key words. Or are you telling me that LR can read my mind, and can find "Uncle Bill at Kelly's 1st birthday" even though I didn't tag that group of photos with "Kelly's 1st birthday", and included them without further categorisation (key-wording?) in "Visit to Fred and Ginger"? Just to help you undersrand, here's an analogyy. I need a new(er) car. The only feature I want beyond the basics is enough cargo space for the occasional visit to the builder's supply store and garden centre. A CUV with fold-flat back seats will do nicely. But the salesperson keeps trying to sell me a more expensive SUV, whose back seats don't fold flat. But is has more cargo space. And a 3rd row of seats, normally folded down. And a towing package, in case I want to haul a load of paving stones on my non-existent trailer. And it comes with a roof rack. And tire pressure sensors are standard on it, unavailable on the CUV. And a drop-down DVD player in the roof for the kids in the back seat an add-on option for the CUV. And zoned heating/cooling, unavailable on the CUV (which is built for cheapskates,it seems). And so on. By your logic, I should buy the SUV because it can do much more. Even though the back seats don't fold flat. But fold-flat back seats are the one item on my must-have list. not my logic at all nor is it a good analogy. i've never said to get an app packed with features you don't need. what i said was to get an app that's explicitly designed to do the tasks you want to do, which in this case is managing assets. trying to do that with a general purpose tool might work some of the time, but it's not ideal. a better analogy would be you want to move large heavy items, perhaps furniture or industrial equipment, or the paving stones you mentioned. everyone tells you to get a cargo van with a hydraulic lift because it's designed to carry such items, plus the lift will make getting them into and out of the van very easy and you won't need a second person to help you either. you say no to that. instead, you'll just use a trailer attached to your car, except that without a lift, it's going to be exhausting and the car was never designed to pull that much weight. one of those is going to work *much* better than the other. tl;dr get the best tool for the job. But to keep you happy: I'll be testing a number of photo-asset managers over the next couple of weeks including Lightroom. ok keep in mind it's a different workflow, but once past that initial hump, it all makes perfect sense. |

Why do you feel your folder system has reached limits? [...] It hasn't (and unlike a car, it doesn't wear out), and I'm expanding it to make finding photos easier. But entering photos into any management system takes time, a program offers a much faster search, and the blurbs suggest that additional categorisation of the existing store should be easier. In my manual system, that entails renaming folders, or creating another layer of subfolders. So I thought I'd give a photo-organiser a try. i do this...) Eg, /Year_Picnics.
I'm interested in a relational database type of "asset manager", which will automatically tag a file with all the folder names in its folder tree. Eg, all items in /Picnic will be tagged with that label, as well as the folder names all the way up to the parent folder. Searches on tags would produce lists of files from all folders. Lists would be sortable, and should be savable as libraries. Recommendations, anyone? Yes please; I need something to actually burn selected metadata on to the image itself - for printouts. I have to do this manually via PShop. |

Here¹s what you can add, and how you can add it. http://pixelsucht.net/metadatacc/en/metadata-cc-photoshop-panel/ Read out metadata and insert it as a Text Layer. No location on website...or do you have to know the super-secret handshake to gain access? i do know, but i'll let you in on the secret: https://www.google.com/#q=buy+lightroom note that it's been 2 years since lightroom 6 was released and adobe's product cycles are generally 18-24 months, which means now would *not* be a good time to buy it because lightroom 7 is due at any time. another thing to be aware of is that if you subscribe to lightroom and stop paying, only the develop and map modules are affected. you can still use lightroom to browse, access and export content. In Linux we just use Shotwell, DarkTable. For Windows Phototheca looks pretty good.
