Default USB2 card reader appears more than once on XP Windows desktop.

Hi everybody,

Here is my configuration :

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Pro 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2
CPU: x86 Family 6 Model 4 Stepping 4 AuthenticAMD ~1399 MHz
MB: MSI K7T266 PRO (MS-6380)
RAM: 256 Mo

USB: 4 USB 1.1 ports on the motherboard and 5 USB 2.0 port from a PCI
extension card.

I bought a PQI USB2 6in1 card reader.
If I plug the card reader on one of the USB2 port, I can see 4 removable
devices appearing on the Windows Desktop.

Only one of this device really works (and it works perfectly at the high
USB 2.0 speed !)

If I click on the 3 other ones, Windows ask me to insert a card into the
flash reader : if I do it, it still ask and nothing happen.

I had the same problem under Windows 2000 (same config)

Does anybody know what happen and know how to solve it ?

Thanks in advance.

In facts, my card reader is not a 6in1 but a 4in1.
I just understood that each removable driver may match a format-specific
reader (CompactFlash, SmartMedia ...) and it would explain why I can see 4
drives.

Can anyone can just confirm ?

Thanks.

My reader is an 8-in-1 and operates exactly as you have described.

So does my internal 9-in-1.

Your reader correctly shows four drives--that's exactly what it
has--SmartMedia, Sony Stick, Compact Flash, and SD Card. The other X-in one
cards use one of the four drives (i.e., the SD, MD and MediaCard all use the
same drive).

If you aren't sure which drive holds the card you use, first find the card
on one of the drives, then label it. For example, the card that goes into my
Pocket PC is labeled "Axim."

I use this same trick on my USB thumbdrives.
