Default Included with XP?

I am interested in getting a new platform for my computer that has Windows
98. I also have a used laptop that has an XP platform on it, but it does not
have office Windows or Excel. If I buy XP pro does it include Word and Excel
or do I have to buy different softwear to have those?

Thank you.

There is no product called "office Windows." MS Office comes in different
"bundles" that include Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook and Access in
different combinations, but the XP operating system does not include any of
them--they have to be purchased separately.

The office apps (Word, Excel, etc.) are not included with XP. They are
separate programs from Microsoft.

If you bought them separate from your Win98 though, and still have the
install disks, then they should work under XP. I use Excel97 under XP
Home quite happily for example. Note that I'm presuming you're going to
scrap out the Win98 machine when you get the XP so the office apps will
only be running on one machine.

Alternatively if you buy a new computer from Dell or various places,
they'll sell you the office apps with the new computer for additional money.

Good luck...

Windows XP Professional (or Home edition for that matter) are simply the
operating system. Microsoft office suite is an entirely different set of
applications and needs to be purchased separately. If you simply want an
office type suite of applications you could always go for Open office which
is freeware available from www.openoffice.org For freeware Open Office is
an excellent set of applications.

Neither Windows XP (Professional or Home) nor any other version
of WIndows has ever come with these apps, nor with any other
significant application software. Such programs have to be
bought, either by themselves or as part of Microsoft Office.
If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows,
came with these, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled
Microsoft Office as part of the package he sold you, not because
that version of Windows came with it. Some, but not all, vendors
do the same with Windows XP.

Others have said it as it is. So it's either buy and install Office (or its
individual programs), or "go shopping" to find a computer with them
pre-installed. Mine came with MS Works, woefully inadequate for my needs,
so I bought and installed Office XP to upgrade old 97 and be able to
continue using its creations.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.
