Default Operating swapping question followup

Just do it, clone the laptop hard drive to the desk top
drive, remove as much hardware as you can, fire it up ,
activate and hang on, it will find all the new stuff, work
through it one at a time.

I assumed that when I purchased my laptop, I also
purchased 1 license to use XP. I'm sure I paid something
for the XP license through COMPAQ. In other words,
Microsoft got something when I purchased my laptop, so if
my laptop is disabled (lets say my car runs over it), I
lose the license for the software also?

My laptop was an OEM purchase and my WIN 98 was also an
OEM purchase. I believe the answer I am getting is "NO
WAY!"

I have a laptop with XP Prof. I also have a desktop with
Win98 2nd edition. I want to swap operating systems

since
my desktop needs XP more than my laptop. Can I do this
and reactivate XP on my desktop without cost?
