Default Software problem

Hello every body
I am running WinXP with 3 user accounts, only one of them has administrative
rights. the problem is that my scanner software (Microtech scanner on a SCSI
port) does not work except in a profile with administrative rights or if I
use Run As admin from other restricted accounts. Is there a way to overcome
this as turning all the accounts to admin pauses security issues on this
computer?

Thanks in advance

Hi Activo,

Check permissions on the installation folder that houses the program. The
limited user accounts likely have only the "read" privilege, and they will
need "read and execute" and possibly "write" permissions. Do not confuse
this with the program folder attributes (which will show as read only), you
need to access the security tab of the folder properties.

To access the security tab, in WinXP Pro you must disable "simple file
sharing" on the view tab of folder options in the control panel. In WinXP
Home, you must restart in Safe mode and logon as the default administrator.
You want to check permissions for the "everyone" and "\users" group.

An alternative suggestion is to contact the scanner manufacturer for
assistance. Many now distribute small utilities that you can use to correct
access permissions in thier software for limited user accounts.

You can make these users "Power users"
(Restricted user has no write access to the registry).

Thanks Rick for your tweak, it works and the problem is solved. Is there any
side effects to switching off the simple file sharing?
AlKutin, the software refuses to work unless the account has full admin
rights, did not work.

Hi,

No, there is no side effect to disabling it. The folders still will retain
default permissions and shares unless you explicitly change them.
