changes to task manager
Probably during the major update to win10 2 or 3 weeks ago, Task Manager
changed and now there is a status column. That wasn't there before, was it? And in that column on a few lines is a pointed hollow green balloon with a short string hanging down. That seems to mean that process is suspended. It says that for me for Cortana, and just a second ago was added Cortana Background Task Host, Microsoft Outlook Communicattions, Microsoft.Photos.exe, Offic Hub Task Host, Video Application, and Windows Shell Experience Host. What did I do to cause these to be suspended. What do they have in common? Do I ever need them and will they come out of suspension if I do? TIA |

The process will still have a memory footprint but a suspended process can be quickly killed. While suspended, the process will consume no CPU cycles. How long ago since they were last used? What did I do to cause these to be suspended. Did you use them right now (to see they get unsuspended)? What do they have in common? They went idle. Do I ever need them and will they come out of suspension if I do? Whenever called, they come out of suspended state. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexp...w-build-17672/ |

Suspend started with Windows Vista. |

And I guess it does look more like a leaf than a balloon. It says that for me for Cortana, and just a second ago was added Cortana Background Task Host, Microsoft Outlook Communicattions, Microsoft.Photos.exe, Offic Hub Task Host, Video Application, and Windows Shell Experience Host. How long ago since they were last used? November of 1932. What did I do to cause these to be suspended. Did you use them right now (to see they get unsuspended)? I don't even know what they do or what uses them. What do they have in common? They went idle. Aha. Do I ever need them and will they come out of suspension if I do? Whenever called, they come out of suspended state. Good enough. Thanks, Van. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexp...w-build-17672/ And thanks for this. |

Any particular reason for picking that month and year? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_1932 Or maybe Nov 5 (but way back further to 1605) for Guy Fawkes Night celebrated in Britain because you just watched the "V for Vendetta" movie where the main character wears a Guy Fawkes mask? Or are you telling us you are over 85 years old? |

I remember it was only a couple years after the crash and that the Depression had just started, but we had already ordered the computer and we had to take it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_1932 Or maybe Nov 5 (but way back further to 1605) for Guy Fawkes Night celebrated in Britain because you just watched the "V for Vendetta" movie where the main character wears a Guy Fawkes mask? They did make motherboards with vacuum tubes, so it's not unheard of. http://ixbtlabs.com/articles2/aopentube/ Paul |

TIA I expect the App model has been around and consistent for a while. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win.../app-lifecycle If an App is suspended, it can be killed if the OS needs resources. But that's not an arrow in the diagram. As an example, the Groove music player, when you would iconify it, the music would stop playing. And that means the task state changed, and the program was not designed to deal with it. They fixed that. (Now, I think Groove is slated for the chopping block.) If an App program window isn't on the screen, it's a safe bet that allows program state transition. Cortana might be an exception, in the sense that the Cortana search dialog entry box is always there. But if the Cortana response window is not showing, there's no reason for Cortana to be running in the foreground. Paul |
