Default windows system error

Lately I've been getting a little dialog pop up by the task tray saying,
"windows system error - duplicate name on network"
there is no network, this is my laptop, not connected to any lan
any ideas what may be causing that?

i had had an autoexec bat with a subst line but recently removed that (by
renaming to autoexec.bak and rem 'ing the subst line)
....don't know if that would be causing an error.

Probably a virus or other malware.

i had had an autoexec bat with a subst line but . . .

WindowsXP does not require AUTOEXEC.BAT (and cannot
use most of the DOS functions loaded by this DOS file.)
