Getting into safe mode: PC boots too fast!!!
Hia folks Has anyone else had dificult getting into safe mode, in W8? The PCs I'm testing boot up soooo fast that, no matter how much I hit F8, or SHIFT+F8, I can 't get into safe mode ---//--- "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. Traditional hibernation saves the entire state (applications and OS). But what users assume is a shutdown, is actually kernel hibernation, and it would seem involved S4 and "BIOS recovery from hibernation" on next start. So what you want, to achieve a measure of control (ability to enter BIOS, ability to actually specify what happens), is a "full shutdown". shutdown /s /full /t 0 There's another command that comes to mind. powercfg.exe /hibernate off Anyway, some things to play with. I had some trouble with my Win8 test machine, getting in control of it, and I was in a "boot loop", where I couldn't enter the BIOS to change the boot device, and I was ending up back in Win8 again. It's possible I used the powercfg command to escape that. But maybe the shutdown one would have worked. HTH, Paul |

KenW To get Command Prompt, you want to run "cmd.exe". And for some commands, you'll want to right click on "cmd.exe" and select "Run as Administrator". That elevates the Command Prompt window, and runs all the commands as Administrator. Many commands need privileges to work properly, which is where an elevated Command Prompt window comes in handy. The reason for opening a Command Prompt, is so you can see any output the command might return. For example, if you mis-type parameters to the command, the command might have an error message to that effect. Paul |

"Ken1943" wrote in message ... Do they have msconfig is that thing. Run or Command Prompt. All are present by typing the letters when on the Start Screen - when you start typing a letter or string of letters the Search feature will be enabled Optionally the Start Screen has a group called Windows System that contains Run and Command Prompt. Clicking either of those will perform the same task provided in Win7. Also rt. clicking on the Command Prompt tile will provide the option to Run As Administrator. Msconfig (System Configuration)comes with the usual tabs - General, Boot, Services, Startup, Tools Note: a. The Startup tab will have a note informing you that Start options are now managed by Task Manager (not Task Scheduler). Task Manager is also an available tile in the Windows System group. b. The System Configuration utility is present in the Administrative Tools group (in Win7 one needed to enable the option for Administrative Tools to appear on the Start Menu, the same applies to Win8 - for the group to appear on the Start Screen that's accomplished by enabling it to be shown via PC Settings.) c. Task Manager has some new features compared to Win7 and continues to be accessible by Control-Shift-Esc from the Win8 Start Screen or Desktop. -- ....winston msft mvp mail |

To resurrect the legacy mode of F8: Run a Command prompt as Admin and type: bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy (Note there are four spaces in the command.) When the computer is restarted you'll find the F8 key works. |

Still can't use F8, after all this. Damn thing flies past too fast... However, found this site: http://www.windows7hacker.com/index....-boot-options/ Both "shift+RESTART" and "shutdown /r /o" work. So I'm happy ---//--- "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass.
