4G USB stick
One thing that does seem to have gone south since installing Win10 1803,
is my Huawei E3372 dongle, I did have a hell of a job getting drivers for it installed in "stick mode" rather than "hilink mode", but now it just sits there making the PnP unplugged noise every few seconds I guess I'll have to retrace my steps on how what finally worked a few months ago ... I gather rs5 will have a re-vamped stack for mobile broadband, maybe that will play nice with a generic Microsoft driver, rather than the mess of manufacturer abandoned drivers? |

Not everyone here (amongst those who read and might respond) know what is a "Huawei E3372". When you said "4G USB stick" in the subject, I thought you were discussing a USB flash memory stick. Nope, you're discussing a cellular (2G/3G/LTE) USB stick which might also have wi-fi connectivity (their description and their manual is unclear since, for example, they never mention if it uses 2.4 or 5 GHz or both) So what happens when you uninstall the device, do remnant registry and file cleanup, and reinstall its software? Also, make sure you configure Windows 10 to *not* automatically update the drivers. Stop having Microsoft break what is already working (well, for the drivers -- can't do anything about what Microsoft changes in Windows 10). https://consumer.huawei.com/en/mobile-broadband/e3372/ Oh wow, now that was a very detailed product description ... NOT! A search on "e3372" on their support page is worthless. "Support for LTE category 4 on the E3372 dongle from Huawei means you can enjoy faster Wi-Fi download rates, up to an incredible 150 Mbps." Oh, wi-fi support, really. On which band? 2.4GHz or 5GHz or both? They are so flaky and incomplete in their description and documentation that it is unclear if they think "wi-fi" means "cellular". I found an online manual at: https://usermanual.wiki/Huawei-Techn...uick-Start/pdf Did you check the SIM card is fully seated inside the USB dongle? Remove and reinsert a couple time to wipe the contacts. It mentions a "management program" so the device requires software gets installed. Tis not new that Windows 10 updates end up crippling some software. Uninstall and reinstall to see if you get the device working again. |

No I didn't mean 4GB, I meant 4G Nope, you're discussing a cellular (2G/3G/LTE) USB stick Here mobile data is called 3G or 4G, more often than LTE which might also have wi-fi connectivity (their description and their manual is unclear since, for example, they never mention if it uses 2.4 or 5 GHz or both) No WiFi So what happens when you uninstall the device, do remnant registry and file cleanup, and reinstall its software? Its software? Hah they seem to hide that, removed HUAWEI drivers and now some MS drivers seem to have 'taken over' the card, at least that's stopped it looping PnP plug/unplug/plug/unplug Also, make sure you configure Windows 10 to *not* automatically update the drivers. Stop having Microsoft break what is already working (well, for the drivers -- can't do anything about what Microsoft changes in Windows 10). I don't think you get much choice about updating drivers when upgrading from 1709 to 1803 https://consumer.huawei.com/en/mobile-broadband/e3372/ Oh wow, now that was a very detailed product description ... NOT! A search on "e3372" on their support page is worthless. Yep, they seem to assume you will use it in "hilink mode" where it looks like an virtual ethernet router on the stick, but I prefer "stick mode" where it's like a ndis card "Support for LTE category 4 on the E3372 dongle from Huawei means you can enjoy faster Wi-Fi download rates, up to an incredible 150 Mbps." Oh, wi-fi support, really. On which band? 2.4GHz or 5GHz or both? I found an online manual at: https://usermanual.wiki/Huawei-Techn...uick-Start/pdf Did you check the SIM card is fully seated inside the USB dongle? It doesn't get as far as loading the correct drivers, the SIM card will be fine once it does, it was ok a few weeks ago Remove and reinsert a couple time to wipe the contacts. It mentions a "management program" so the device requires software gets installed. Tis not new that Windows 10 updates end up crippling some software. Uninstall and reinstall to see if you get the device working again. As I said, I'll plough through all the stuff I downloaded a few weeks ago, to get it working first time, the thing is I downloaded *such* a lot of drivers before hitting on the right one (I think from Lenovo who offer an internal HUAWEI 4G card) that I can't exactly be sure what did the trick. |

When you said "4G USB stick" in the subject, I thought you were discussing a USB flash memory stick. No I didn't mean 4GB, I meant 4G I can understand the confusion. A lot of technically illiterate people (and I'm sure you're not!) tend to omit the "B" and refer to a memory card as "4G", "64 G", "128 G" etc. Vanguard evidently saw "4G USB stick" and interpreted it wrongly as "4GB USB memory stick" :-) Nowadays you'd be lucky to be able to buy a memory stick with as little memory as 4GB, which should have given the game away. Having said that, I still have a 4GB memory stick from a few years ago that I use to carry around installation EXE files for (free) applications that I install for people, to save me having to download a fresh copy over the internet if they have very slow broadband. I should probably treat myself to a newer, larger memory stick so I don't have to be selective with what I copy to it, and in case the present stick starts to develop faults because I believe the NAND gates in memory sticks have a finite number of 0-to-1 and 1-to-0 transitions that they can make. |
