My bank branch is closed. The ATM still works.
Checks can be deposited using the envelopes provided
(only works on bank-building-mounted ATM machines).

I presume they have some fallback mechanism. Not clear
what it is though.

Before driving to the bank, you may want to use the
online branch selector, and check the "hours of service" part.

In my case, walk to the bank, I only go about 4 times a year, All my
utilities and rent are done by Pre Authorized payment, so will check as
you suggest the next time I have to go. :-)

thanks,

Rene

Mine too.

I use my phone's bank app to deposit a check. The phone is
used to take a photo of the check being deposited which is then
transmitted to the bank by the app. I keep the physical check locally
until the transaction is verified and then destroy it.

Check your bank, I'll bet it has the same service. I haven't had the
need to go to the bank in many months since I can complete most
transactions using the phone. Very handy...

I don't have a cellphone, all my calls are made from home, besides all
my Pension payments, GST payments etc are direct deposit so I very
seldom have to go to the bank anymore.

I still have a landline though I keep threatening to get rid of it and
live on the cell alone.

I use direct deposit for my pension here too. Also direct outgoing
payments from the bank for utilities etc. Life is much less complicated
these days than when I had to mail everything...

In keeping with the spirit of social isolation I went grocery shopping
on my phone today for the first time. I ordered the weeks groceries on
the store's app. I got a text when they were ready. I drove over and
parked in a numbered slot. And an employee came out and loaded them in
the back of my SUV. And it saved me money because I couldn't do any
impulse buying...

I very rarely receive cheques but when I do, they tend to be above the
value limit for the phone app.

than others.

Only £500 per cheque here.

Both my and my wife's bank offer that on their apps. Mine is a majopr
bank, my wife's is much smaller. Given that, I'd think that nearly all
banks would have that feature.

Yes, you can pay bills online, you can send money to others using
Zelle or other services (built in to my bank's app, we hooked my wife
up via her debit card, since her bank doesn't directly support it.)
trips to the bank are *very* few and far between. I use very little
cash, most everything can be paid by debit card.

I also get (and write) few checks these days. But so far I haven't
figured a way to live completely without them.

but when I do, they tend to be above the value limit for the phone

My bank will allow me to deposit an over the limit check using the phone
app if I call and get authorization. If you are a good customer yours
may also...

Same here. Mostly tips and great/grandkids (just increased to 39)
birthdays for me.

most everything can be paid by debit card.

I always pay for (almost) everything with a CREDIT card. My bank gives
less protection for a debit card. A debit card overcharge can overdraw
my checking account causing other checks and debits to bounce (and much
mayhem). My debit card has no cashback feature (about $1K/yr for me).
BUT I always pay off the balance every month, otherwise the CC would be
a lousy deal. Oh... and always using the credit card phone app of
course...

I've been with my bank a little over 50 years now (if that make me a
good customer?) but probably the main reason they let me cash over
limit checks using the phone app is because I have more than enough
deposits in other accounts to cover it...

I also pay all bills online, but I use Quicken billpay, which I prefer
because it simultanously pays and makes an entry in the check register.
That's not only a convenience but it also eliminates any possibility of
the two not being for the same amount.

Same for me. Almost the only time I need to go there is if I need to get
something notarized, take something out of out safe deposit box, or put
something in it. Those are all very rare occurrences.

I use very little
cash,

Same for me. About the only payment I make with cash is to my barber. He
will take a credit card, but he charges for it.

I also very rarely write a check.

But I *never* pay for anything with a debit card. I greatly prefer to
use a credit card because

1. I get airline mileage.

2. It's much less vulnerable to problems, and if a problem develops a
quick call to the credit card company fixes it.

3. Worst case, there's a $50 charge for a fraudulent charge (but I've
never had to pay that $50).

4. There's float on the amount paid.

However I don't use the credit card for credit. I buy only what I can
afford to buy. The bill is paid in full each month, and I never pay any
interest.
