Default Newbie Q - W10 License?

Former Ubuntu user - I want to install W10 on an empty PC I have been
given. I will buy a licensed version of a W10 OS. but if I do, is it
a one-time buy? Or do I have to renew it annually?

It's one-time. If it's a full licence you will also be able to transfer it
to a new machine in the future.

It's a one-time buy. There is no SaaS yet.

You don't need to even buy a license yet.

You can install and evaluate first.

During the install, use the "I don't have a key" item at
the bottom of the install window. I use this all the time
for test installs (particularly, but not limited to, VMs).

*******

If you use Linux to approach the download page, Linux doesn't
(nominally0) have .NET. And this is the excuse that Microsoft
gives, for what happens next.

The download page will give you a *direct* download link to an ISO.
The problem is, the x64 ISO is too big for single layer DVDs.
Not many people will be keeping copious stocks of dual layer
media.

You could put the ISO on a USB stick with Rufus, but that
isn't exactly convenient either. Rufus, as far as I know,
does hybrid sticks, so if you need to boot in a pure UEFI
mode, you could with Rufus.

The "oversized" DVD has 11 OS images on it, compressed.

Win10_1909_English_x64.iso 5,421,459,456 bytes

*******

If you use a Vista or later version of Windows 10, the
User Agent your browser passes will cause the delivery
of a stub downloader called "MediaCreationTool1909.exe". It
downloads an ISO with 8 OS images, and that ISO is the
right size for single layer DVDs.

*******

I'm not aware of anyone running MediaCreationTool in Linux,
under WINE, and doing the download that way.

Maybe you can be the first.

https://download.microsoft.com/downl...onTool1909.exe

19,255,000 bytes

You can get Windows 10 x64 Pro or Windows 10 x64 Home.
Pro has GPEDIT.msc, so you can change some of the policies
in the OS.

But don't buy anything, don't buy a key, unless you're
satisfied with what you see/test.

The grace period on the license is 30 days, plus a couple
re-arms. You should know in a matter of 3 days testing,
whether the install is worth keeping or not.

You don't need any drivers. Only my TV tuner card (Hauppauge)
has no driver. Linux doesn't have the firmware file for it
either, so the OSes are "equal" in terms of the level of
neglect.

I just tried on Mint 18.3 and wine 1.6.2 An older wine but that's
Mint. It did nothing, no pop up, no error (visible), and I'm not
hunting logs.

Interesting.

I have a sooper-duper config around somewhere.

My problem here is "now, what VM did I put that in" :-)

That's why I didn't volunteer to test, because right
now, I don't know which one I should be using.

If I was organized, I'd be dangerous.

Or you may come out a coupla hundred bucks ahead by buying a OEM license
from your local Frys or Bestbuy. Not transferable, but probably a third
of the price.

Why the fuss? Isn't it obvious MS's strategy is to eventuqlly "rent"
their software with some cyclical fee. I've often remebered B. Gates
when young stated he felt he should be paid for every time someone used
his software and not just this buy once use whenever approach we are
familiar with.

Once it's a "rented" product MS will give it away to anyone anytime
anywhere. You'll just have to pay for various levels of use.

Least that's what I see the future bringing.

Yup. For applications at least; Office is already going that way. I
imagine the OS will be "free" from now on as MS have already stated
there won't be any new versions/releases of Windows.

That's why I treasure my old Office 2003 & 2007 disks. Office has added
nothing I need or use since 2003 for me.

Office 2010 was really a headache wasn't it! Just about as un-intuitive
and unnatural as one could imagine. The open source office software is
adequate for users like us too, I think. When Cortana gets to the
points where she dictates your letters from the spoken word, then that
may be a game changer (and how far off can that be...).
